Allegheny Bird Dog Club
Berlin, Pa. — More than ten years have passed since the Allegheny Bird Dog Club hosted a field trial. To go along with some of the new faces at the club, some new ideas came forward. Our field trial course, which previously finished on a long, steep, uphill climb, was rerouted. The course would now finish at the bottom of the club grounds where a pick-up would be waiting to take the judges and handlers back up to the breakaway. Our judges all walked and we appreciate their time and effort.
The weekend started with an Open Shooting Dog Stake. Ten dogs came to the line under Judges Carlos Escalante of Altoona, Pa., and Jim Wysocki of Stoystown, Pa. Capturing the blue ribbon was Doodle Ridge Mia, tricolor setter female for handler Dave Hughes. Mia is owned by Dr. Bruce Mueller of Bedford, Pa. Mia had a good forward race with several finds and good manners. Beech Hill Echo, white and orange setter female, received the red ribbon for her effort for owner-handler Eric Locher. Upper Ammonoosuc Sadie rounded out the placements. Sadie was handled by Mark Hughes for owner Edward Marquis of Salem, Mass.
Our Open Derby was presided over by Bruce Mueller and Pete Molnar.
The winner was Phillips Half Moon, handled by Dave Hughes for owner Matthew Phillips of Cobleskill, N. Y.
Doodle Ridge Mia got her second blue ribbon of the weekend in the Amateur Shooting Dog, handled by owner Bruce Mueller. Beech Hill Roxy earned a red ribbon for Eric Locher. Both dogs had forward races and good bird work under tough conditions. Both of our amateur winners previously placed in the Grand National Grouse Futurity with Roxy winning it in 2009 and Mia placing third in 2011.
The weekend’s main event was an Open Shooting Dog Stake on Saturday. We were honored to have Helen and Richard Brenneman as judges. Seventeen dogs came to the line. At the conclusion, Double Deuce Brody separated himself from the other competitors and was named winner. Brody is a big, strong pointer dog which ran a big, hard charging race. Doug McMillen is the owner. Grouse Ridge Sarge brought home second place for owners George Johnson of Bradford, Pa., and Grouse Ridge Kennels in Oxford, N. Y. Dave Hughes handled Brody and Sarge to their winning efforts. Earning her second ribbon of the weekend was Beech Hill Echo which was named to third place.
