Thayer, Ia. — Ed Powell was a college professor with a love for the Brittany breed. Over the years he held every office in the Iowa Brittany Club. No job was too large or small. When the club decided to pursue a shooting dog championship, it was a “no-brainer” in honoring his service to the club and breed.

The Union County Bird Dog Ranch in Thayer, Ia., was groomed to perfection. Owner Linda Thomas has continually upgraded the grounds and facilities. These grounds are now attracting national level events to central Iowa.

Professional trainers Scott Johnson, Bob Burchett and Ed Tillson, along with amateurs Barry Steinmetz, Richard Beaver and Tommy Thomas, handled the field of 23 entrants.

The American Brittany Club has a long partnership with Purina and appreciates the support that Gail Inman and Greg Blair provide for this event, as well as many others across the country.

Yours truly  of Franklin, Tenn., and Ed Liermann of Palmyra, Wis., looked over the field. Ed has had great success with his string of red setters with multiple national title banners to his credit. He was a pleasure to ride alongside with a keen eye for championship level performances.

Named champion was Hehi Miss Poison Ivy, owned by Thomas Healey  of Clio, Mich., and handled by Bob Burchett. Ivy was released near the section road north of camp and immediately got to work along the lines leading south. With a fluid and powerful gait, she takes in the country with eye appealing ease. She handled early finds at 2 and 3 picking up steam as the gallery neared camp. She was standing on a short line of cover at 12, excellent style with birds pushed north. She made a big swing to the east and met Bob at the road crossing, jumping in the water tank.

On the south side of the road Ivy maintained the front along the eastern edge of the property, made the creek crossing and sailed over the hill west, found standing at 24 but carded an unproductive. Point was called at 30 along a treeline with birds well located. Upon release she sailed south to the creek crossing and was found posed regally on a single at 36. She took an eastern treeline leading to cover over the hill with point called at 45, all manners in order. She made the move of the stake below the south lake rimming three different field edges then turned north. Ivy backed her bracemate as time expired.

Runner-up was Hope’s Chief of Crosscreek, owned by Dr. Barbara and Wayne Pepin and Robert and Polly West, handled by Bob Burchett. Wayne Pepin was in saddle to watch Chief, which annexed his second National Shooting Dog title last October in Ionia, Mich.

Away from the road crossing on the south course, Chief went to work along the eastern property margins meeting Bob at the first creek crossing. He was out of pocket briefly but recovered near the top of the hill where he cast down the hill west and scored a stylish find at 10. He was forward and working lines to the western fenceline with point being called at 17, all manners in order. He stopped at 28 along a treeline on top of the hill; an extended flush and relocation did not produce game.

Chief regained the front down the hill toward the southern section road and froze along a deep gully. Bob flushed for some time to no avail and tapped him on the head. Chief eased down into the bottom of the ravine and pinned running birds, a pretty piece of work. Upon release he was a bit bullish with a cast back north as scout and handler worked hard to get him turned. Eventually Chief came around and continued west with a final find at 50. He finished on the north side of the road going away.
