Turning back the clock to 1964, 55 years ago, and the first Purina Award presentation in May in St. Louis, Missouri. Pictured are Raymond Rowland (left), CEO of Purina, presenting the Award to B. McCall, owner and CEO of Western Grain, maker of Jim Dandy dog food. In foreground is handler John S. Gates with War Storm, the Award winner. War Storm won both the National Free-for-All and the National Championship that spring season on his way to the Purina Award. He was elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame in 2009, joining handler John S. Gates, elected in 1960. B. McCall was one of the great field trial benefactors of the 1950s and 1960s.

The Purina Awards now comprise eight categories — all-age and shooting dog. The 2018-2019 honorees were recognized in Nashville, Tennessee the weekend June 20-21.
