Booneville, Ark. — The Westark Field Trial Club was thrilled to be able to host the NBHA Central Regional Championship March 12-14.

This event was successful in a great part due to the tremendous work our field trial Chairman Glenn Cumbie put into this event. He was lucky and very thankful to have the dedication and hard work of several Westark members including Randy McAlester, Steve Morgan, Jerry Oswalt, and Kenny and Jerry Snow. They were tremendous help and we couldn’t have had such a wonderful trial without their dedicated work.

Speaking of dedicated, Dickie Sorrell and Charlie Collier were the judges and they rode all day Thursday in 80°+ heat and then had to ride Friday and Saturday in the rain with some showers being real “toad stranglers”.

Of course, no trial is possible without sufficient grounds to hold them and we would like to thank the Arkansas Game and Fish and in particular Red Bailey and Brad Wells. Also a big thank you to the outstanding NBHA sponsors — Purina, Garmin, Gun Dog Supply and Mule Brand Gear.

We had an excellent turnout with the handlers from seven different states with Garry Malzone coming from New Jersey. Though he may have come the farthest, he certainly wasn’t the only one who had a lengthy trip to be able to participate in this event. There were handlers from Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Alabama, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

One additional note, we may have had the widest range in handlers’ ages in NBHA history. They ranged in age from 6 to 76. I assure you that you don’t want to draw six-year-old Ms. Penelope, as she handled her dog to a third place finish in the Amateur Puppy. I guess field trialing does have some young blood to keep the sport alive.

In finishing, even with the horrible weather, a good time was had by all.
