Michigan City, Miss. — A year or so ago, Frank LaNasa, current first vice-president of the Amateur Field Trial Clubs of the America, announced the establishment of the AFTCA Top Amateur Handler Award, recognizing the amateur competitor who accumulated the most points during a given field trial season wining placements in amateur stakes.

Thor Kain of Carbondale, Pa., has secured the inaugural Award for 2020-2021.

During a season full of unique challenges, Thor Kain handled four stylish setters to an impressive 442 point total for wins in 30-minute Amateur All-Age and Amateur Shooting Dog Stakes held by AFTCA Member Clubs, distancing himself himself from a competitive field to win these accolades. Thor will be awarded the Top Handler Plaque along with an engraved sterling silver AFTCA Top Handler Belt Buckle to honor his successful season.

Thor spaced his six first place wins, four second place wins and three third place wins over a nine-month period beginning with a Shooting Dog first over twenty other competitors at the Mohegan Bird Dog Club's fall (2020) event with his setter male Super Storm. His 13th and final season placement came on May 23 at the Ocean State Bird Dog Club's Shooting Dog Stake handling his setter female Deciding Point to first place win over fourteen others.

A steady, consistent approach to the long season paid off with evenly spaced wins . . . a truly impressive effort.

The four dogs handled to points-earning placements during the season: Deciding Point, Super Storm, No Limit and Power Forward.

Congrats Thor! What a great start to this program despite all of last year’s challenges. A big thanks to Frank LaNasa who conceived of this great program to acknowledge the accomplishments of amateur handlers.
