English Setter Cover Dog Awards

Hurtsboro, Ala. — An earlier posting highlighted the confirmed winners of six of the Setter Funds Awards — John S. O'Neall Open All-Age, Elwin G. Smith Open Shooting Dog, Herman F. Smith All-Age Derby, Bill Conlin Open Shooting Dog Derby, George W. Evans Amateur All-Age, and the John S. O'Neall. Jr. Amateur Shooting Dog.

Those Awards were presented the weekend of June 5 at Clarendon Farms in Beaufort, S.C.

It was noted in that feature that when the Setter Cover Dog Awards winners were confirmed, they would be announced.

Winner of the  Michael Seminiatore Cover Dog Award is Travel Alert, white and orange setter male that turned six on June 20. Travel Alert is owned and handled by Dr. Harold Holmes of Flint,  Mich., who has had any number of top-flight setter winners in his career, several of his setter females carrying the Centerfold prefix to their names.

Highlight of Travel Alert's season was winning the Northern  Michigan Cover Dog Champioinship last fall, that stake attracting an impressive 54-dog entry.

The Dr. Thomas M. Flanagan Cover Dog Setter Award winner is Dun Rovens Zip, white and orange setter male owned by Mark and Tom Fernandez of Canal Fulton, Ohio and handled by Richard Hollister.

Zip had a banner Derby season in 2020-2021 foretelling anticipated success as he moves from the Derby ranks to the adult stakes arena.

The eight Setter Awards recognize eight individuals who significantly supported the English setter, seven of them elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame: Michael Seminatore (1964), Herman F. Smith (1971), John S. O'Neall Sr. (1976), Elwin G. Smith (1978), John S. O'Neall Jr. (1984), George W. Evans and Dr. Thomas M. Flangan, both in 1999.

New Englander William R."Bill" Conlin was a highly popular and accomplished professional trainer who promoted and campaigned the English setter in the best of field trial competitions.

The English Setter Awards are made possible through the generous support of the field trial community whose contributions to the Setter Fund provide a firm foundation for the continuation of the Awards program which was established some forty years ago. The initial Award recognized John S. O'Neall Sr., following his death in in June, 1980. The seven subsequent honorees were added over the ensuing ten years.
