Hubbard, Tex. — Hubbard, Tex.— The Brazos Bottom Field Trial Club held the inaugural running of the ABHA  Open Invitational  Shooting Dog Championship October 18-19 at the Porter Ranch, Hubbard, Tex. The venue was in prime shape for the Championship. A dog had to show its ability to hunt the edges intelligently and keep in contact with its handler.

The overgrowth of broomweed made it difficult to see the dogs from a distance. This made for an eventful championship.

The trial format is twelve dogs running for two consecutive days for one-hour each day. Judgment is based upon the dog’s total performance with the principle that a dog can redeem itself with a strong effort.

Judges for this event were Jim Baker, returning from last year, and Harold Davis. This dedicated duo was very attentive and clearly enjoyed each other’s company and the honor of selecting the winners. They were very positive and spent the time and effort necessary to look at every dog’s performance.

The Texas Walking Shooting Dog Association had things well in order and the trial ran smoothly, a credit to both the club and the competitors. For this running of the Invitational 10 dogs came to the line to compete in this prestigious championship. Every brace had multiple finds and in some cases these finds ended the day for some canine athletes.

Pointto’s Straight Shot (Boss), setter male handled and owned by Joe Schneider and co-owned by his lovely wife Janeen of Dayton, Tex., had a balanced two days of running, putting on a display of edge running and multiple quail finds. He was picturesque on point and had his game properly located. This talented setter male had a strong ground race, is powerfully gaited and is a gifted athlete. He carries the genes of another fierce competitor, former Texas Open All-Age Champion Cypress Creek Rock, which is the sire of Boss.

The runner-up was no surprise, Whiterock Cordite (Rocky), setter male handled by Keith Hickam and owned by Charles Schultz and Keith Hickam. Rocky is an extraordinary bird-finder and he didn’t disappoint today. Keith probably shot a box load of shells over Rocky over two days. He displayed impeccable style and class on game.

Keith Hickam really had something to be proud of; he had both dogs in summer camp and his hard work paid off.

Other competitors include: Carolina Rose, owned/handled by Keith Foreman; Bluebell Promise, owned/handled by Keith Foreman; Hobbs Silver Bell, owned/handled by Keith Foreman; Huntmaster Lacy, owned by Rhonda Berg; Agin Agin Agin, owned by Brad Bates; Preacher, owned by James Cardwell; Richfield Turbo, owned/handled by Adrian Jackson; Notorious Big, owned/handled by Adrian Jackson.

The ABHA would like to thank all the supporters and handlers who came out. A special thank you to Dickie Sorrel for allowing ABHA the use of the Porter Ranch and supplying birds, Brian Hinton for Black Gold, a special thanks to T. J. Simms for taking pictures of the trial.
