Berea, Ky. — The ABHA Western Regional Championship took place February 27 at the Miller Welch Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area located just outside of Berea, Ky.

For those unfamiliar with these grounds it is roughly 1,800 acres of rolling terrain, large fields planted with feed strips of milo, and grasses surrounded by largely cedar hedgerows. There are also timber stands spread throughout. They are painstakingly managed by the State of Kentucky mainly for use in field trials and shooting sports. There are also limited hunting and fishing opportunities when no events are scheduled.

Weather during this trial was  not the least bit favorable. A mix of freezing rain and light snow blanketed the area the previous night making for hazardous travel conditions to the grounds. The temperature hovered in the mid-20s for much of the day with relentless wind.

Judging this event was Mike Branscum of Nancy, Ky., and Bill Vest of West Liberty, Ky. They are no strangers to field trials in this part of the country be it horseback or walking. The club  thanks Mike and Bill for their time and dedication.

Named champion was Erin’s Deja Vu, stylish setter female owned by Joseph Link of Ringwood, N. J. Professional trainer Garry Malzone of Indian Creek Kennels handled “Bess” during her bid boasting four finds showing excellent poise throughout.

Earning runner-up honors was Indian Creek Courageous Cat, pointer female owned by Edward Marron, Jr. of Ho Ho Kus, N. J. Cat was handled by Garry Malzone during her three-find performance resulting in a sweep by Indian Creek Kennels.

Both  young dogs have very bright futures.

Our friends at SportDog graciously   provided our champion with a ProHunter 2525 unit and runner-up with a Sport Hunter 1825. We can’t think SportDog and Sportsman’s Pride enough for their continued support.

Thanks to everyone who made this trial possible. We hope to see you at our next trial.
