Punta Gorda, Fla. — The AFTCF puts on six trials every year. The Piney Woods trial is normally run late in the season and features a one-hour All-Age Stake with the Lester Alford revolving trophy going to the winner. In addition to the All-Age Stake, a 30-minute Shooting Dog and a 30-minute Derby round out the program. A total of 31 dogs was drawn for this event.

Our judges were Becky Jacobs and Vince Feltmer. Both judges are well known and respected in the German Shorthaired pointer world. They were very attentive to every dog and their decisions were well received. We would like to thank them for the long hours in the saddle.

As at every trial of AFTCF we have a great cookout on Saturday night. The ladies and some of the men show off their culinary skills with some great side dishes and hors d’oeuvres. Justin’s venison bites were outstanding.

The temperature both days was between 60° in the morning and high 70s mid-afternoon. Both days there was little or no dew making conditions dry.

There was still water in the shallow ponds and water holes, but water was carried on the saddle and was used frequently.

THE WINNERS

In the Open All-Age, Funseeker’s Rebel Tex, handled by Don Wood, ran in the second brace and carded a picture book find well to the front at 45 to take first place. Tex coupled his bird work with many strong casts staying to the front. Second  was Justin Muzynski and Holopaw’s Axel which has been having a strong season and continued with another placement this trial.

Eight contenders came to the line in the Open Derby and put on a show. The young dogs have been getting stronger and more polished this season and some new talent showed up the field. Double Down Cruise ran to the limits and handled well for Dave Vernasco to take the blue. Cruise is a big strong dog with a great deal of speed. Second place was Little Miss Mess, owned and handled by Chris Koutras. Miss Mess flew over the early part of the course and then settled down when the cover got thicker. Don Wood and Funseeker’s Texas Preacher placed third.

In the Open Shooting Dog, point was called 200 yards to the left and Petie Brown cantered to the scene and then spent five minutes with many relocations trying to get a reluctant quail to fly. The sharp report from her gun indicated success. Soon after Myakka Hey Jude and Petie regained the front to put the finishing touches on a great job, netting them first place in the 18-dog stake. Double Down Easter Sunday, with Dave Vernasco, challenged the winner with a very strong race netting them second place. Placed third was Myakka Freddie Freeloader (Beth Brown) which also had a strong race but not always to the front.
