The Association of Virginia Field Trial Clubs, Inc. held its annual meeting and awards ceremony August 13 at Mario’s Italian Restaurant in Amelia, Va. Approximately 35-40 guests were in attendance.

The annual Dog of the Year Awards were presented and the winners and runners-up are shown in the accompanying box. Congratulations to all the winners.

Highlight of the day was the presentation of the Lifetime Patron award to Nick Reams. The plaque stated as follows: “A proper moniker for Nick Reams would be ‘The Troubadour of Virginia Field Trials’. He is truly never without a song. He is also very good at both singing and playing them.

“A self-proclaimed country boy, Nick is also very good at building anything and working with bird dogs. His quail hunting led him to National Bird Hunters trials and then on to the horseback world of shooting dogs.

He enjoyed the intense competition of the Virginia trial scene and his dogs did well for many years.

“His Flatrock kennel name is listed many times in The American Field and the AFTCA histories of winning performances. Before cutting loose a dog, Nick’s words to his bracemate were always, ‘Good luck, and if I don’t win I hope you do.’

“No doubt Nick’s most notable winner is Flatrock Sugarplum, who became a multiple open shooting dog champion. Neither Nick nor his beloved wife, Virginia, ever had trouble telling the glories of Sugarplum or any of the other Flatrock charges. Proud, yes, and well they should be.

“Nick was a stalwart club member in the venerable Virginia Capital Field Trial Club. He acted as a club officer and was a principal worker in the club trials. Nick is a family man, a gifted musician, a master storyteller, a dog man and an honest and good guy. A legacy to be admired.”
