Tuskegee, Ala. — The 20th renewal of the Bama Quail Classic began on December 5, 2019. Twenty years ago, when the Bama Quail Club ceased operations, Billy Kitchens, Jane Kitchens, Cyd Kitchens and Brian Peterson acquired the Bama Quail Club charter and held the first field trial on our grounds in Tuskegee, Ala. The Kitchens family was the driving force for Bama Quail for many years and continue to support the club. We will always appreciate their efforts in bringing field trials to these grounds.

Brian Peterson was there at the beginning and as president continues to work to improve the grounds and our trial. We all hope to see another successful twenty years field trialing in Tuskegee.

Mr. Gary Fuller has generously allowed us to continue field trials on these grounds. Without the generosity of landowners such as Gary, field trials would be very difficult to maintain. Club members and the field trial community thank him for supporting our trial.

Nestlé Purina PetCare has been the sole dog food sponsor for this trial and we appreciate their support. Their representative, Mr. Greg Blair, is a pleasure to work with and is always supportive.

As part of our 20th anniversary celebration we wanted to ensure everyone was well fed. Jan Servais provided lunch on Thursday, Connie Hicks on Friday, Lynn Byrd took over lunches Saturday and Sunday. Our Florida contingent of club members, Mark Hinote and Lyle Pittman, provided hot breakfasts, Mark fried fish on Friday night and Lyle and gang provided barbeque and hash Saturday night. Comments ranged from “cannot eat again for a week” to “best food at a field trial ever”. Thank you to everyone for the excellent meals.

All of our club members stepped up and helped with trial preparation, judging and all the tasks that go with hosting a successful trial. Thank you to everyone for making the trial a success.

Judges for the Amateur Derby were Hunter McDuffie and Darron Hendley. They had eight Derbies to review in what proved to be a quality group. All Derbies had bird contacts. First was awarded to Miller’s Packing Heat, handled by Fran Miller. Second was Southern Ritz Lane, handled by Brian Peterson. Third was Dubose’s Wander Bog, handled by Bobby Dubose.

Thirty amateur shooting dogs were judged by Hunter McDuffie and Walker Davidson who looked for dogs presenting strong, hunting ground races coupled with premium bird work. After observing all thirty entrants the judges awarded first place to Electronic Warfare, handled by Bill Goodwin. Second was Miller’s Heat Wave, handled by Jack Miller. Native Lucky Boy, handled by Bill Harkins, was third.

The judges were consistent in their pace and observed each entrant closely and went about their work professionally.  Their decisions were well received.

Last but not least were our participants. Some have been running dogs at this trial for the full twenty years. Thank you everyone for entering your dogs in the Bama Quail Classic. Good judges, good participants and good food made our 20th anniversary trial an enjoyable experience. We hope to see everyone again next year, and for many years.
