Bill Gibbons Has Died

Aug 02, 2018

Just as this issue was being prepared for press (August 2), a brief news item arrived that erst- while professional trainer-handler Bill Gibbons of Phoenix, Ariz., had died.

Over a long career, Bill was suc- cessful with several breeds of point- ing dogs — pointers, setters, the continental breeds — and if he bred and raised them, they likely carried the “Magma” prefix to their names.

Back some years, Bill spent summers in western Oklahoma, near Arnett, where Judge Lee West and the late Bill West also had a camp.

In the communique sent by Anne Taguchi, she noted that “Bill didn’t just train dogs, he trained people. Watching him train dogs was like watching magic, but the true magic was that Bill had a way of explain- ing things to people that made training simple to understand and implement.”

May he rest in peace.
