Broomhill Trials

Melita, Man. — The 2019 Broomhill trials near Melita, Manitoba were successfully concluded with the naming of the winners in four good stakes.

In the Manitoba Open Championship, the winner emerged in Valiant, six-year-old white and liver pointer male owned by Jay McKenzie of Eureka, Kan., and handled by Randy Anderson. Valiant rendered an exceptionally convincing performance in this broad prairie country, carding three finds and a back in a strong and forward ground effort. Runner-up was Erin’s Longmire, white and orange pointer male owned by Brad H. Calkins of Centennial, Colo., and handled by Tony Reynolds. Longmire was credited with one find and a back. Twenty-two dogs competed.

[Robin Gates’ string was handled by Tony Reynolds after Robin sustained a back injury when his horse went down during the earlier trials at Mortlach. Tony did a commendable job.]

In the John S. Gates Derby (seven entries), the winner was Live Oak Game Point, white and orange pointer male owned by Marilyn Jones of Hatchechubbee, Ala., and handled by Tony Reynolds. Runner-up was Miller’s Direct Dial, white and orange pointer male owned by Matt Griffith of Edmond, Okla., and handled by Randy Anderson.

In the Broomhill Open All-Age with twenty (20) entries, the winner was Shadow’s Next Exit, five-year-old white and orange pointer male owned by N. G. (Butch) Houston of Nashville, Ga., and handled by Tony Reynolds. Next Exit had a limb find and good ground effort to secure his placement. Second was Touch’s Spaceman, three-year-old white and orange pointer male owned by Matt Griffith and handled by Randy Anderson, with two finds. Touch’s Blackout, seven-year-old white and orange pointer male owned by Ric Peterson of Gilbert, Ariz., and handled by Anderson, with one find, earned third.

Handler Randy Anderson swept the companion Open Derby (six entries). First was Miller’s Speeding Bullet, white and orange pointer male owned by Dan Hensley of Claremore, Okla. Second was Dixon’s Rolling Stone, pointer male owned by Kevin Dixon of Sulphur Springs, Tex., and third was Raymond’s Jess, pointer male owned by Raymond Dixon of Rockdale, Tex.

Judges for all stakes were Colvin and Mazie Davis.
