Central Prairie Field Trial Club

El Camelot First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake

Bluff City, Ill. — On October 26 the Central Prairie Field Trial Club hosted its fall NBHA trial at Bluff City, Ill.

Butch Spelbring is the Central Prairie Club. He is the only member remaining and his dedication to field trials has kept this club active.

Again this year the trial was held at the Sandy Run Hunt Club in Bluff City, Ill. Owner Bill Blythe has graciously opened up his wonderful facility to host this trial for several years. Not only does Bill host the trial, he also prepares our noon meal. This year he had pulled pork which was great. No trialer left hungry.

Jae Crunk fixed a large container of peanut butter cookies to top off the meal. She did mention that these were Butch’s favorite.

One of the scheduled judges had to cancel at the last moment, so instead of running his shooting dogs, Butch stepped up and judged all the stakes along with Jim Lawless. Both judges have trained dogs, campaigned dogs, and judged many trials. The club was very thankful for both judges. They were very attentive to all entries.

Now for the not so good news. It rained all day and it was a cold rain. Scenting conditions were not good.

The Shooting Dog was won by El Camelot, pointer male owned and handled by Dan Draffen of Speed, Mo. “Cam” had a huge race and a great find on a bird that did not cooperate and fly. Cam withstood a running bird and the judges finally ask Dan to shoot. Cam finished his 30 minutes strong to the front. Second place went to Brouillett’s Creek Sheba, setter female for Dan Davis, which had a stop to flush. Third place was awarded to Bud Beaucoup Creek Buck, setter male for Don Heisner.

The Amateur Derby placements were all three based on race and some bird contacts. First place went to Brian Stockram with his pointer female Dot. Placed second was Winter, setter female for Liz Blair. Bud, pointer male for Dan Draffen, took home third.

This trial drew very poor conditions, but thank you to all who came and ran your dogs.

Thanks to Bill Blythe for allowing us to run this event on your hunt club.
