King William Va. — After a winter of many rainy days, the Chickahominy Field Trial Association had a Saturday that was both dryer and a little warmer than we have experienced in a long time.

Having had to postpone our trial last fall, we were able to reschedule to this spring at the Cohoke Shooting Preserve in King William, Va. The Cohoke facility is a private preserve that is owned by Floyd Gottwald, Jr. and is managed by Mike Prince. Mike made arrangements with Mr. Gottwald for our use of these grounds. Dennis Doswell maintains the preserve and his ability to provide a first class shooting preserve as well as a top notch venue for a walking field trial was obvious. We are grateful to Mr. Gottwald for allowing us to use Cohoke for our trial and to Mike and Dennis for all they did to help make our trial the success it was.

Judging this spring were three fellows who know bird dogs, what they should do and how they should do it! Judging the puppies and Derbies were Lee Flanders joined Johnny Lewis who  have been competing and been successful in U. S. Complete trials for many years and who watched the “youngsters” show off their potential.

In the Puppy Stake, they liked Gary Dowdy’s Bullitt which ran a big race that explored most all of the Cohoke course with adequate handling to make him available at pickup. Steve Graham’s pup Lucy also ran to the front and looked good on the ground.

In the Derby, only two dogs finished with Maize earning first. With this young dog at just a year old having six “Derby” finds and hunting the cover is showing that she should become a competitive finished dog. Sadie had two game contacts and a stylish merry race.

Doug Mays came over from the horseback circuit to join Johnny Lewis in evaluating the shooting dogs. First was Lee Flanders’s Hoss Man, a first year shooting dog that had five evenly spaced finds coupled with a good searching race finishing at the far end of the bean field. Another young dog, Lancaster’s Hit Man, only 19 months old finished second with three broke finds, a back and a hard hunting ground covering race. Rounding out the placements was another pointer from the Lancaster kennel, Rex which had three nicely spaced finds coupled with a forward race and a nice strong finish.

The Chickahominy Dog of The Day Plaque which can be awarded to any dog in the trial was awarded to the Shooting Dog winner, Lee Flanders’ Hoss Man.

We appreciate these judges taking their time and bringing their horses to ride and watch our dogs! Their decisions were well received

The Chickahominy Club returned to Cohoke to run this trial after running several trials over the past few years at other venues. Returning to Cohoke was a refreshing change with the help of several members of the Hanover Club. Waverly Coleman pulled the gallery wagon with his pickup; George Ramkey and Kirk Regensburg tended to the bird planting duties, Kirk Regensburg also helped with the dog wagon along with Art Mourino.

Lunchtime at a Chickahominy trial is always a time that everyone looks forward to and today was no different thanks to Judy and Phyllis Jones and Evelyn Coleman.

We hope everyone will come back in the fall and join us again!
