South Hill, Va. — The Cockade Bird Dog Club held its fall trial September 28-30 at the Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area in South Hill, Va. Once again Cockade and Gloucester Clubs joined up in a cooperative effort to have all-age, shooting dog and walking stakes. This has been a resounding success. Great to get together for fun and competition.

I cannot thank Gary Winall enough for having my back, and Ashby Morgan for joining up for such a successful weekend and wearing all his hats.

Thank you to all the judges, Gary Winall, Ashby Morgan, Jameson Crandall and Sharon Townley. Whitley Stephenson, Jim Jones, Bruce Conover, Diana Haynes for planting birds, and everyone for all the entries.

The weekend was warm and humid.

We had great food and fellowship.  Thursday evening Ashby provided a crab feast and Jim Jones brought wings. Friday, Ashby had a low country boil, and Saturday Gary and Ellen provided pork chops, potatoes, beans and cake.

September was unseasonably warm for Virginia.

The Winners

Gary Winall took first and second in the Puppy Stake with Don and Doc, and Bruce Conover took third with Bad News Bob.  The puppies ran hard to the front and all showed great prospect for handle and race as Derbies.

First in the Open Derby was Mohawk Mill Trail Warrior for Gary Winall with two finds and a hard, forward race. Mohawk Mill Captain Hook was second with one find and a nice race Third was Chief Red Cloud, handled by Phil Stephenson and owned by Whitley Stephenson, with a nice race, a find and two backs.

Moving forward as  the temperature increased, the Open All-Age found New Salem Katie for Larry Cox in the winners’ circle with a strong race and one find. Second was Mr. Tommy John for Jim Jones with two finds. Placed third was Rush To Judgment, handled by Phil Stephenson and owned by Brian Tiffany. She had a bit more of a lateral race and a nice find.

We picked up again Sunday morning with the Amateur Derby. Earning first was Dry Creek Tiny Dancer which  showed much maturity on her birds and had a nice race for Jeff Smith. Second was Whitley Stephenson’s Chief Red Cloud with two nice finds and ran well in the heat. Third was awarded to Mohawk Mill Zeva with a find and a nice forward race.

It was a tough day for the all-age dogs. The winner was Palmetto’s Sky King for Rodney Poston. King had a very nice race in the heat and had three finds, one being a beautiful covey find.

The Amateur Shooting Dog was the final stake. All three placements were awarded to handler Sharon Townley and her crew of setters and a Brittany. First was Beechwoods Madison with five well placed, polished finds and a very nice shooting dog race. Awarded second was Pinekone Whistling Dixie with two finds and a big shooting dog race. Placed third was Remchester’s Taking Chances, owned by Richard Edwards, which carded one find, had a pleasing race and worked well with handler.

Thank you to all.
