South Hill, Va. — The Cockade Field Trial Club held its annual fall trial October 11-13 at the Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area in South Hill, Va.

With the last few months being terribly dry and hot, it was nice to have cooler temperatures and a few showers on Sunday.

Again the weekend was in cooperation with the Gloucester Field and Stream U. S. Complete trial.

We ate well. Crab, seafood chowder and wings on Thursday night; Boston butt on Friday, crab dip and chips Saturday night, and lunches each day.

We certainly watched some very nice dog performances to start the Virginia trial season and enjoyed great social time.

A big thank you to Gary Winall for all his support in so many ways, Ashby Morgan for all his work, judging and cooperation, Sharon Townley for judging and helping with food and all the bird planters and supporters with food, work and entries.

THE WINNERS

We began with the Open Derby and Open All-Age on Friday.

The Open Derby was a very good stake with Mohawk Mill Good Advice taking first with a good race and one find. Second was  Mohawk Mill Knight Hawk with a nice race and two Derby finds. Placed third was Bad News Bob with a nice race, one find and a back.

Keeping it rolling to the Open All-Age we were excited by the performance of Mohawk Mill Trailer Warrior with three finds and a true all-age race. Second went to Mohawk Mill Image with another solid performance and two finds. Third was Stoney Run’s Jane with a good race and one find.

We picked back up on Sunday morning under overcast skies and off and on drizzle and rain.

Beginning with the Amateur Derby, first was earned by Dry Creek Zeke with two finds, one being a beautiful covey find. Awarded second was Mohawk Mill Knight Hawk with a big race and one find. Third was Mohawk Mill Pirate’s Moon with a good race and a pair of  Derby finds.

The Amateur All-Age was a small stake, but had very nice dogs. First was awarded to Foolish Agin with a classy race and two finds. Bonafide Bocephus placed second with a nice race, handled well for handler and had one find. Third was Rocky Ridge’s Second Chance which had no bird work but put down a really nice race.

Rounding out the day was the Amateur Shooting Dog. The rains began to fall and the dogs were doing well with first place going to Alibi Girl for Larry King. She showed out for handler and was a nice shooting dog show with numerous finds. Earning second was Rutter’s Lone Ranger with a nice race and good bird work. Third was Dry Creek Jessie James for George Doyle. He had a big breakaway, one good find and could have had a bit better handle.
