Field Trial Report

Colorado Field Dog Association Trial

By Bonnie Hidalgo | Nov 26, 2018
Last Survivor First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake

Grovespring, Mo. — Thew Colorado Field Dog Association’s fall trial was held November 3 at the Sportsmen’s Field Trial Grounds at Grovespring, Mo. The day was overcast and chilly. With heavy rain forecast for Sunday morning it was decided to put in a long day to complete the trial on Saturday.

The grounds were in excellent condition, mowed to perfection with ample feed strips. Quail were plentiful with several large coveys found on all courses. The parking lot expansion project is well underway but was sidelined by wet weather just prior to this trial. When finished, it promises to be a great addition to this awesome venue.

Our judges were Fred Smith of Mountain View, Mo., and Brian Fidler of Oak Grove, Mo. Both were attentive to all dogs, rode long and hard. We greatly appreciate their time and effort.

Fred was accompanied by his wife Jennifer, who rode most of the day. Brian came with his wife Stephanie, daughter Kenzie, son Andrew and his wife Mikayla, nephew Evan and Andrew’s friend Mason. All pitched in to help put on the trial. Andrew drove the dog wagon most of the day and Mason finished it out. We couldn’t have asked for better dog wagon help!

Mary Boser and Sue Norton helped out in the kitchen and were very much appreciated.

THE WINNERS

In the Open Shooting Dog, Kindle pointed a big covey perfectly and ran a solid, forward race for the win. The Irish setter female is owned by Bonnie and Dennis Hidalgo and was handled by Dennis. Windfall, Irish setter male, was second for owner-handler Dr. Roger Boser. Windfall ran a consistently forward race but went without bird contact. Third place went to Firefly’s Power Play, Irish setter male owned by Bonnie Hidalgo and grandson Robbie Nesson. “Puck” ran a strong and mostly forward race but found no birds.

Hellzapoppin won the Open Derby (judged on shooting dog standards) with two covey finds and a good race. This pointer female is owned by Dennis and Bonnie Hidalgo and was handled by Dennis. Second place went to Momentum which turned in a beautiful race. This pointer male is also owned by  Dennis and Bonnie Hidalgo and was handled by Dennis. Gratitude placed third on the strength of a pleasing, forward race. This Irish setter male is owned and handled by Dr. Roger Boser.

The Hidalgos’ Irish setter male Dawson’s High Chaparral had a nice covey find and a strong race. Dr. Boser placed third with Rendition which turned in a good forward race with one find.

In the Open Derby (all-age standard) only one placement was awarded due to lost dogs. The winner was Verified, pointer female owned by Dennis and Bonnie Hidalgo and handled by Bonnie.
