Field Trial Report

Delaware Pointer and Setter Club

Pine Straw Sweet Tea First in the Open Shooting Dog Stake

Petersburg, Del. — The Delaware Pointer and Setter Club held our spring trial at the Norman G. Wilder Wildlife Refuge in Petersburg, Del., on March 29-31. We had a beautiful three-day weekend event and for the most part Mother Nature tried to behave herself.

The grounds are in the best shape  they’ve ever been in. Thank you Delaware DNR Bill Jones and crew for all of your hard work and dedication.

We enjoyed our meals and fellowship in the new Ralph Kellum C&R Center clubhouse.

I want to thank everyone for your participation and support. We had 64 entries for our three-day event. The USCSDA gave us the opportunity to run their walking stakes this weekend and it was great to meet all of you. The Open and Amateur Horseback Stakes gave us a weekend of fellowship with old friends.

I want to send a heartfelt thanks to all of our judges, Bo (George) Mamounis, Joe Lordi, Jr., Mike Spotts, Bill Bruchey, Ray Gubernat, and Bart Hastings. You rock. You put in a lot of diligent hours in the saddles and never complained.

Thank you to all our participants and their beautiful dogs. What can I say, we can’t have a trial without you. You guys really gave our judges something to look at and you didn’t make their job an easy one for choosing the placements. Just as a little side note, I’d like to give myself (Glendora Dvorak) a little pat on the back for making sure that no one ran on an empty stomach and keeping the kitchen going. You’re welcome, guys.

Thank you to all who helped keep this trial running smoothly and safely. To the road guards, the bird planters and everyone else who pitched in to make this a success, many thanks to you all. We could not do it without you. We love and appreciate all of you.

Now to be perfectly honest with you all, since I rarely leave the kitchen but I do all of the paperwork, the only thing I can report to you is who walked away with ribbons. You all know I run this trial from the kitchen, right? So without any more dithering I’m going to get right to telling you who did what.

The USCSDA stakes were judged by Bo Mamounis of Newfield, N. J., and Joe Lordi, Jr., of Itco, N. J.

Walking Puppy winner was Montana Bullet, pointer female owned and handled by Gary Dowdy of Creswell, N. C. Second was Smokey, pointer male owned and handled by Bobby Benderosa from New Jersey, and third was Knob Mountain Nomad, owned and handled by Mike Spotts, Bloomsburg, Pa.

Walking Shooting Dog  winner was Rebelu Max A Million, pointer male owned by Bart and Debby Hastings of Seaford, Del. and handled by Bart. Second was Islander, setter male owned and handled by Pedrag Kazic of Greenlawn, N. Y. Pirate’s Mean Louise, pointer female owned and handled by Dennis Kivikko of Powhatan, Va., was third.

In the Walking Derby, first was Huckleberry’s Lucky Penny, pointer female owned and handled by Dean Avillion of White Haven, Pa. Second was Knob Mountain Monarch, setter male owned and handled by Mike Spotts. Placed third was Huckleberry’s Pretty Lady, owned and handled by Dean Avillion.

Due to a lack of entries, the Open and Amateur (horseback) stakes did not have any Derby stakes.

The Open Shooting Dog was judged by Ray Gubernat of Hartley Del., and Bart Hastings of Seaford Del., who placed Pine Straw Sweet Tea, setter female owned by Gwynne McDevitt and Mike and Amber Reeves of Newtown Square, Pa., and handled by Jeanette Tracy, first. Second was Limbsmoke Skeet Rock, setter male owned by Lloyd Miller of Bensalem, Pa., and handled by Matt Basilone. Limbsmoke Polar Express, setter male owned by Lloyd Miller and handled by Matt Basilone, was third.

It looked like it was a great day to be a setter.

In our Amateur Shooting Dog, Judges Bill Bruchey fo Port Deposit, Md., and Mike Spotts placed Bella Bulli, pointer female owned by Ernie and Karen Saniga and handled by Ernie Saniga, Kennedyville, Pa., first. Second place went to Jubullee, pointer female owned by Ernie and Karen Saniga and handled by Ernie Saniga. Third was Rebelu’s Last Chance, pointer male owned by Bart and Debby Hastings and handled by Bart Hastings.

Congratulations to all our owners, handlers and dogs on your placements at our trial. Thank you all once again for your support and participation. Until we see you again, hopefully in the fall, be safe, be well and be happy.
