Thomasville, Ga. — The Dixie Open All-Age and Open Derby were concluded March 16 on Burnt Branch Plantation near Thomasville, Ga. The All-Age drew 37 entries, and 17 youngsters competed in the Derby.

I am sorry to say the Dixie Puppy Stake was cancelled due to lack of entries. The board members discussed securing sponsors for next year’s event. Hopefully, we can continue this longtime event next spring.

Our thanks to owners Eddie and Carole Sholar for hosting these stakes. There are always plenty of birds throughout the courses on Burnt Branch.

The Plantation crew was on hand each day to ensure a smooth running trial.

Greg Sheperd, Judd Carlton, Rick Furney and I handled the course-directing duties.

James Parker had sausage and biscuits, coffee, and snacks on hand after the first brace.

Excellent lunches were served by Mr. Parker and his crew each day. KoJak drove the dog wagon with assistance from Rick Furney, Gary Futch, and Greg Sheperd.

Purina was once again our advertising sponsor. I would like to thank the Purina board members for reinstating the Dixie Open All-Age with both Purina Dog of the Year and Handler Points this year. Hopefully, we can secure points for the Derby next year.

Our judges were Kirk Law of Dawson, Ga., and Ed Chance of Albany, Ga., both longtime dog men. They have both bird hunted and competed in trials for many years. Their knowledge and experience resulted in well-received decisions.

Judges for the Derby were Tommy Rice, Jr. and Trey Mills, both of Thomasville, Ga., who were asked to judge on a short notice. Thanks to them both for stepping up to the plate. Yes, they are dog men as well and have guided hunts and developed young dogs that are competing in trials throughout the country.

First place  in the Dixie Open All-Age was Touch’s White Knight, six-year-old white and orange pointer male owned by Eddie Sholar and handled by Mark McLean. Running in the 6th brace, White Knight was credited with three stylish finds and an extreme forward ground race.

Second was Dunn’s Tried’N True, five-year-old white and orange pointer male for his Kentucky owners Will and Rita Dunn. He was handled by Luke Eisenhart. Tried’n True was also credited with three finds and a smooth ground race.

Third was Dominator’s Rebel Heir, white and liver pointer male for owner James Hamilton, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and handled by Jamie Daniels in the 8th brace. Heir was credited with four finds and a forward ground race.
