Iron and Oak First in the Jimmy Northcutt Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog Classic

Autaugaville, Ala. — The Dry Pond Field Trial Club held its annual field trial on the grounds of Dry Pond Plantation in Autaugaville, Ala., the weekend of November 3-5.  The Jimmy Northcutt Memorial Shooting Dog Classic concluded this year with a youth trial. The club wishes to thank Purina for their continued support of field trials. The Open Derby drew seven pointers. The judges for the Open Derby were Jeff Gibbons of Prattville, Ala., and Tommy Hicks of Wetumpka, Ala.

The Derby winner was Ransom’s Southern Charm, pointer female for owner-handler Jim Hughes. Second was Prime Passion Lane, pointer female for owner-handler Brian Peterson. Third was McRee’s Penny Lane, pointer female for owner-handler Pat McPherson.

The Shooting Dog Stake judges were Marty Robinson of Carrollton, Ga., and Terry Amberson. A big thank you to Jeff Gibbons who took Terry’s place after he became sick with the stomach virus.

The judges named handsome setter male Iron and Oak as the winner for owner-handler Ross Leonard. Rentz’s Fire and Ice, beautiful pointer female  owned by Joe and Trisha Rentz of Fayetteville, Ga., placed second with an impressive race. Third was pointer male Cavalry Sergeant for owner-handler William Goodwin of Prattville, Ala.

The judges are thanked for giving their time and well received decisions. We thank all those who came out and supported the Jimmy Northcutt Memorial Shooting Dog Classic.

Dry Pond Youth Trial

The Dry Pond youth trial started shortly after lunch under clear blue skies and unseasonably warm temperatures. As usual, a large gallery was assembled consisting of family and friends to cheer the youngsters on. The handlers included McKenzie Powell from nearby Prattville, Ella Grace Montgomery from Union Springs, Addison McDuffie from Cecil and Taylor Roberts from Selma, Ala. Allen Bearden from Valley Grande drove the dog wagon. Ross and Caroline Leonard of Lookout Mountain, Ga., kindly filled the judicial saddles.

No stranger to the winners’ circle, Two, setter male handled by Addison McDuffie, took first with two nice finds and a nice forward race. Taylor Roberts did an exceptional job with her  pointer B. This young dog is gorgeous while pointed. Ella Grace Montgomery took Kate around the course and had one clean find that earned her third. Fourth was Dot, handled by McKenzie Powell. Dot went birdless but laid down a good hunting dog pattern.

The club wishes to thank the family members and friends who encourage and support these young bird dog enthusiasts. Watching them improve each year and have fun is very satisfying.
