Luthersburg, Pa. — The Dubois Beaver Meadow Field Trial Association hosted its fall 2019 trial in Luthersburg, Pa., and kicked off the start of the Pennsylvania Walking Shooting Dog Association points season.

The drawing at the home of trial chairman Douglas McMillen attracted 113 entries covering the seven stakes.

Gomes and Thor Kain for the Derby Qualifier; Nick Blakley and Dave Park for the Shooting Dog Qualifier; George Hetrick and Robert Matson for the Open Puppy; Dave Park and Eric Munden for the Amateur Derby; Justin Evans and Greg Fried for the Open Shooting Dog; Mike Spotts and Eric Munden for the Open Derby; Mike Spotts and Dave Blakley for the Amateur Shooting Dog.

We thank them for all their time in the saddle.

Sponsors were Purina which provided dog food for the placements, and the Ruffed Grouse Society which provided judges’ gifts. Thank you to Purina and Greg Blair as well as RGS for the support of our sport and this trial.

There are many who also work behind the scenes who help make this trial such an enjoyable time. Thank you to Amy Blakley, Mr. and Mrs. Yutzey and Mary Stiteler for the amazing meals we all enjoyed over the weekend, and to Paula Guiletto who always brings a delicious treat for all. Thank you to the Hayes Family for the puppy course grounds and to Charlie Reynolds for the use of the main trial grounds. Nick Blakley donated a tremendous amount of time helping to prepare the grounds for the event which is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Nittany Mountain Trail Rides and R. B. Powell for use of their horses and Dave Blakley for doing many tasks including planting birds and providing his ATV for bird planting.

Thanks also to Douglas McMillen for keeping things running smoothly as well as many other tasks too long to list.

The weather was favorable for the trial with a cool down into the upper 60s, days of high temperatures and humidity preceding the trial.

THE WINNERS

In the Derby Qualifier,  Apple Annie’s Sweet Delight, classy white pointer female handled by Dave Hughes, won first. She stretched the limits of the course with one mannerly Derby find deep in the birdfield woods.  Blue Ribbon’s Harper Bella, classy white and black pointer handled by Robert Ecker  ran with a medium range and had two nice finds. Third was Coal Creek Rip, stylish tricolor setter male also handled by Robert Ecker that scored two finds and ran  a medium searching race.

The Shooting Dog ran Friday afternoon with Pleasant Valley Copper, owned and handled by “Doc” Stiteler, winning first. Copper  ran a beautiful forward race, scoring three finds and handling well and showing the manners of an experienced performer. Wildland Warrior, white and liver pointer female owned and handled by Eric Munden, scored two finds and a back with a forward hunting race. Phillips Moonlite Lily, third, white and black setter female handled by Mark Hughes, ran a classy race scoring three finds and a back.

Saturday was another beautiful day with the Open Puppy and Open Shooting Dog running concurrently and the Amateur Derby finishing out the day after the Shooting Dog.

The Open Puppy was dominated by Art Bruno of Midnight Kennels who handled Miss Penelope Star to first, Grouse Hunt Farm Bullett to second, and Pretty Bayou Georgia Bell to third. All three covered the course well, laying to the front and showing nicely.

The Open Shooting Dog was the largest stake of the trial with 36 entries.

Awarded first was Double Deuce Molly, handled by Dave Hughes, due to her ease and class over the course and her style on three finds.  Power Forward, handled by Thor Kain, was gorgeous on point standing through a divided find and two of her own and handled the course with speed and class. Third was Phillips Moonlite Lily (Mark Hughes). She ran extremely hard and scored three finds with her effort putting her ahead of the next closest dog.

Saturday ended with the Amateur Derby finishing with the setting sun. In first was Blue Ribbon’s Harper Bella, white and black pointer female owned and handled by Marty Festa. She was a joy to watch scoring three finds and running with a forward well handling race. Apple Annie’s Sweet Delight, white pointer female owned and handled by Andrew Dawson, finished in second. She handled beautifully around the course but didn’t finish with any bird contacts. Third was Island Pond Finnback, white and liver pointer male handled by Doug McMillen, which ran a forward searching race stretching the limits of the bell range which in the end finished without bird work.

Sunday had more of the same beautiful weather as the past two days with the Open Derby running first thing in the morning. Placing first was Wayback Spectre, white pointer male owned and handled by Dave Park, which ran a forward searching race scoring two finds and handled with Derby manners. Double Deuce Pearl, white pointer female owned and handled by Doug McMillen, ran with a medium range handling beautifully and scoring one find. Third was Island Pond Finnback, white and liver pointer male handled by Dave Hughes. Finn ran a far- flung hunting race with two stops to flush.

The day and trial finished with the ever competitive Amateur Walking Shooting Dog.  Wildland Warrior, white and liver pointer female owned and handled by Eric Munden, ran a forward searching race scoring six finds showing impeccable manners on each find. True Choice, white and liver pointer female owned and handled by Greg Fried, ran a forward, fast and classy race showing incredible bird work on her three finds. Double Deuce Zeke, owned and handled by Doug McMillen, was third with a fast race, showing consistently to the front and scoring three finds.

Thank you to everyone who supports the trial with their time and entries. We look forward to seeing you this spring.
