Exeter, R. I. — Another “three day weekend” of back-to-back walking field trials is once again behind us.

Based on the weather forecast, both clubs were prepared to deal with rain for much of the weekend, but in spite of overcast skies, the heavier rain that was forecast held off until Sunday afternoon, to the delight of all in attendance.

The grounds were in great shape and everyone competing seemed to appreciate the way the course was rerouted in order to take advantage of newly opened up and mowed areas. Our sincere appreciation goes out to Will Walker, who manages the Arcadia Area. Thank you Will. Your efforts mean so much to the field trial clubs that use this area.

Bob Fleury chaired the trial for SNEBC and was at the grounds on Thursday with Mike Tiberii setting up and otherwise making sure that all was ready for a smooth start Friday morning.

Jane Bjork carried field trial chair duties for ENEBC on Friday. In spite of best efforts, early arrivals on Friday encountered a locked gate resulting in a slightly bumpy start for the ENEBC trial. But in short order, the right key to the gate and Patrick Carey’s arrival with delicious pastries from a local bakery, in addition to donuts and coffee, helped right the ship and pave the way for smooth sailing for the weekend.

The number of entries allowed keeping to a single course, which also permitted a one-hour stoppage at noon for lunch all three days. Leslie Fleury, you have our thanks and appreciation for single-handedly taking care of delivering and setting up lunch for all.

Each club offered a happy hour with all the trimmings. Patty Johnston stepped up to organize the happy hour for ENEBC on Friday, and additionally a raffle to benefit ENEBC. Sheila Cordner engineered the SNEBC happy hour on Saturday which was up to her usual standards of excellence. Many thanks to both of these ladies for a delicious and relaxing end to the day, and thanks to all who contributed to the happy hours and raffles in any way whatsoever.

Once again, Paul Fuller, host of Bird Dogs Afield TV and a gun dog columnist for Northwoods Sporting Journal, graced the SNEBC trial with his presence on Saturday. Paul followed the Amateur Gun Dog Stake with his trusty camera to video the action and interview competitors and others about our sport.

Although conditions were somewhat damp, the birds were flying and the dogs were getting into it — for the good or the bad depending on your outlook. Mike Tiberii’s outlook on Friday was definitely on the good side with an Open Shooting Dog win that finished Kahlua III as an AKC Open Field Champion.

Bob Fleury and truck served quadruple duty for bird planting, dog wagon and viewing platform for those who wanted to witness the action without having to walk themselves into the ground, as well as transporting judges back to the start to keep the trial flowing and saving time.

Thanks to Art, Mike, Loyd, both Pauls, Craig, Brady and others who helped with the bird planting.

Overall it was good times and a fun weekend with  entries from New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Florida.

Prayers go out to the far too many that need them these days. If you could make it to the trial, bless you, and if you could not, know that we’re all thinking of you.
