Fast and Furious First in the DeLuca Open Shooting Dog Classic

Ionia, Mich. — Our 2018 renewal was contested on April 12-13 over the courses at Ionia. The drawing produced a nice entry of 26 DeLuca Classic entries and well supported Amateur events which would, it seemed, be easily accommodated in our designated time. All plans were in place for a great four-day event.

The winner, Fast and Furious, ran first brace Friday morning with Mike Tracy at the helm. He bested the two from the fourth brace which were held on top Thursday afternoon — Dezasterous Jax The Ripper (German Shorthair/Dan DiMambro) was second; Coosawhatchie Smooth Ride (pointer male/M. Tracy) was third.

Jeff Haggis of Glencoe, Ontario, and Tom Davis of Sylvania, Ohio of German Shorthaired pointer fame accepted the task of judging the Classic. We sincerely thank them for their efforts and days enduring the nasty weather while watching the 26 dogs that we were able to run. Luckily they had three placement worthy dogs at the end of Friday the 13th.

The first two days were in the mid-30s, low-40s with relentless wind and sporadic light horizontal rain. Despite that most competitors had bird work; the dogs worked well.

Saturday morning produced driving rains and heavy wind so we decided to wait for things to improve. At noon we cancelled the scheduled Amateur stakes when the National Weather Service issued a severe winter storm watch for the entire area, including accumulation of an inch of ice for Saturday night and Sunday. The weather continued to decline and we were unable to complete the Classic.

Indeed, the ice storm of 2018 came to pass and grounds were not pronounced useable until the following Wednesday.

We wish to again thank our sponsors, Purina and SportDog, for their generous continued support of our event. These are lean times for our kind of trial here in Michigan and without support like theirs, the judges and others who donate time, effort and sweat equity, we would not be able to continue.

Thanks also to members of the Michigan Championship Association for working with us on the cleanup of the grounds. Details of the running were tendered by Bill Branham and Bill Klenner.

Daily lunch was served by your writer with the help of Julie Branham who donated all desserts and doughnuts each morning. Chris Cagle hosted a great chicken dinner on Saturday night and we were joined by several members of the MOSD Championship.

Professional trainers in attendance were Dan DiMambro, Shawn Kinkelaar, and George and Mike Tracy who were joined by amateurs Dr. Marion Brown and Chris Cagle.

Fast and Furious is a white and liver pointer male coming five in July, and owned by New Jerseyites Bill and Muriel Primm and ably handled by Mike Tacy. He ran at 8:15 on a cold and windy Friday. His strong and forward effort included five nice finds well spaced throughout his hour. He showed high style and good composure on all, along with a strong forward ground effort and extremely nice finish. He has a very classy way of going.

Second and third place came from the fourth brace, after lunch on Thursday. Dezasterous Jax The Ripper is owned by Matthew Lee Smith of Long Beach, Cal., and was handled by Dan DiMambro. He ran a nice up-front hunting effort rewarded with five finds, showing nice style and manners around game coupled with a hard hunting effort which required little scouting.

Coosawhatchie Smooth Ride, five- year-old white and orange pointer male owned by Andrea Clark and Casey Rackett, is from the Tracy string. He scored four nice finds with excellent manners and one back. He has a classy way of going and finished strong.

The judges also mentioned Southern Touch (Kinkelaar), Sugarknoll War Paint (Tracy), Rudy (DiMambro) and Adjusted Attitude (Tracy).
