The Field Trial Clubs of Illinois (FTCI) held its annual Dog of the Year (DOTY) banquet and awards on Saturday, July 13, at Hamilton’s Banquet Hall in Jacksonville, Ill. The evening began at 5:00 p. m. with a social hour followed by dinner at 6:00 p. m.

Chad Chadwell, president of the FTCI, welcomed a large crowd of 95 in attendance to the 2018-2019 Dog of the Year Awards presentations.

Mr. Chadwell also recognized several special guests in attendance, including Nestlé Purina representative Terry Trzcinski. Nestlé Purina is a primary sponsor of the FTCI, supporting our Junior Handler program, our three Winners’ Classics, along with the DOTY Awards program.

Brad Hargis of Quail and Upland Game Alliance (QUGA) was on hand for the evening. QUGA promotes the establishment, restoration, and maintenance of quail and upland game habitat and has become a valued sponsor of the FTCI.

Ray Trimble, a recent honoree at the Bird Dog Foundation with the designation of Living Legend at a luncheon gathering in June, 2018 in Grand Junction, Tenn., was in attendance. Ray and his wife Mary Jo have been active in Brittany circles for many decades. The Trimbles’ successful careers encompasses all avenues of the sport from breeding, training, and handling. The FTCI expresses its congratulations to Ray on this distinguished award.

Also on hand for the evening was Shawn Kinkelaar of Effingham, Ill. Shawn was recognized at the Purina Awards program in June as the 2018-2019 Purina Top Shooting Dog Handler of the Year. Shawn had an impressive year handling the Top Shooting Dog Award winner, Hale’s Southern Touch, owned by Dr. Jeffrey Hale of Russellville, Ark., and also the season’s Top Shooting Dog Derby, Silver W Jill Z, owned by Dr. Debbie Ozner of Ochlocknee, Ga. This year marks the fifth time Shawn has won the Purina Top Shooting Dog Handler Award.

Shawn began field trialing at age twelve in Illinois. He is currently closing in on 150 championships, and has handled eleven Top Shooting Dog Award winners.

The FTCI extends a hearty congratulation to Shawn on his impressive career achievements, and wishes continued success in the future.

Chadwell then thanked all who helped sponsor our celebration including Nestlé Purina, SportDog, QUGA, B & B Tack and Buckles, Collar Clinic, Dogs Unlimited, Haggis Saddlery, The Saddle Guy (Kevin Parrish), Wil-Nor Outdoors LLC, and all those who purchased an advertisement in our DOTY catalog.

The FTCI also thanks Sean Derrig and Jeff Wagoner who graciously donated several prints that were part of our evening’s raffle.

Chad and Nancy Chadwell donated unique adult beverages for our silent auction, and for all the raffle and silent auction donations.

Next on the agenda was recognizing those who worked hard behind the scenes to make the evening a success.

Pat Sheehan and Neveta Salmons arranged the venue and the dinner. Jeff, Kelly, Zak, and Stephanie Wagner continued their tradition of providing unique raffle items for our silent auction items, prints, and several tables of raffle items.

Gene Salmons once again oversaw the production of our DOTY Catalog. Chadwell then recognized the officer group and the FTCI Board of Directors, thanking them for all their hard work and dedication to the sport of field trialing.

Other FTCI officers are Pat Sheehan (vice-president) and Neveta Salmons (secretary/treasurer). The Board members include Jeff Wagoner, Brad Hargis, Jeff Marshall, Mary Jo Trimble, Mark Johnson, Lori Rezzardi, Brian Sheehan, Gene Salmons, and Sean Patrick Derrig.

Associate Directors are Aaron McAfee, Ed Janulis, Donna Janulis, John Hott, Matt Collins, and Rodger Fiorito.

Chadwell gave an invocation before dinner, including a moment of silence in remembrance of those of our field trial community who had passed during the season.

After dinner, Chadwell then turned to the Dog of the Year (DOTY) Awards program. Also recognized during the evening were several dogs from Illinois which did well in regional and national competition.

DOTY chairman for each breed has the honor of presenting the awards to the owners of the winning dogs. The DOTY chairpersons are Neveta Salmons, Brittany; Angie Vicari, Continental Breed (Lori Rezzardi presented awards); Brian Sheehan, Horseback Pointer and Setter; Brad Hargis, Walking Pointer and Setter; Chad Chadwell, Vizsla; Maeve Derrig, Junior Handler. Chadwell called upon Maeve Derrig to present the last award of the evening. Maeve is the Junior Handler Chair and presented this year’s winner, Charlie Remmers, with a jacket and plaque sponsored by Purina.

This year’s runner-up was Ella Mahan. Ms. Mahan was not able to attend the awards.

Our award winners were not just from Illinois; there were owners and handlers from all over the Midwest at this year’s program. Recipients were from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Congratulations to the winners.

Once the awards portion of the evening concluded, Jeff Wagoner explained the silent auction and raffle procedures. The FTCI would like to thank all the auction and raffle sponsors who helped to make our evening and DOTY Program a success.

The officers and members of the Board of Directors of the FTCI stayed overnight to attend the bi-annual board meeting on Sunday at Hamilton’s.

The Field Trial Clubs of Illinois would like to thank everyone who participated in the banquet and awards program this year. The FTCI would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners and runners-up in the Dog of the Year Awards, and we wish all field trialers continued success in 2019-2020.
