McBee, S. C. — The 2021 running of the Fort Mill Field Trial Club was held October 30 through November 4 on the grounds of Sawtooth Plantation outside of McBee, S. C. We started the trial with mild temperatures and ended cold with light rain.

Once again Sawtooth Plantation owners John and Sue Ivester were very generous with their grounds and facilities for our field trial. John was in attendance often and we enjoyed his company. We are certainly grateful to them for the use of their grounds and facilities. Without their generosity we would not have a place to run our trial.

The judges who spend much time in the saddle keeping a close eye on the attention of the dogs and handlers this year were for the Amateur and Open Derby: George and Jack Kimbrell, Fort Mill, S. C.; Amateur Shooting Dog: Gary Futch and Randy Marsh, both of Statesboro, Ga. The Open Shooting Dog: Johnny Atkinson of Marion, S. C., and Grayson Francis of Brookneal, Va. Thank you to these gentlemen for their time and willingness to judge.

The drawing this year had a total of 64 dogs. We had five Amateur Derbies, twelve Amateur Shooting dogs, seven Open Derbies and forty Open Shooting dogs. It requires a lot of help as well as entries to have a successful trial.

As usual John Ray Kimbrell kept things running smoothly as the stakes manager and bird man. George and Julie Kimbrell made sure all were well feed since most restaurants were not open close. Jack Kimbrell tended to animals, assisted with scouting and anything else that was needed.

We missed Austin Sherman this year as he is now attending college and could not get away. And Mary Kimbrell got a much-deserved break but was still in attendance. THANKS to all who pitched in to help!

We always want to thank the handlers, scouts, dog owners, and visitors that came to support our Trial. We are looking forward to another successful trial next year. Hope to see you there!

AMATEUR STAKES

We had a group of nice Derbies that showed lots of potential. The winners had good forward races, but the scent conditions were unfavorable. The winner was Bodacious May, owned and handled by Gary Futch of Statesboro, Ga. Second place was Cook’s Stevie Nicks, owned and handled by Harry Cook of Darlington, S. C.

The Amateur Shooting Dog began on Saturday morning. Clayhill Bones, pointer male owned by Bill Britt of Blythewood, S. C., and handled by Tim Ruff of Irmo, S. C., took First place. At’A Boy’s Strangle Hold,  pointer male owned and handled by George Kimbrell of Fort Mill, S. C.,  was second. Hazelwood’s Smokin Joe, pointer male owned by George Julie and Jack Kimbrell and handled by George Kimbrell, took third place.
