Field Trial Report

Freeland Kennel Club

By James Wilkinson | Oct 05, 2018
Nottingham's Storm Warning First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake

Weatherly, Pa. — The Freeland Club’s trial started under cloudy skies and dew on the fields. A pleasant day to run the trial.

The kitchen duty was handled by our club member Mike Galada both days, breakfast and lunch. Thanks, Mike.

Saturday evening the wives at the trial put on a wonderful meal. It included pierogies, or three corners as we call them, pulled pork, barbecued ribs, baked potatoes and cole slaw. Everyone enjoyed the feast and didn’t go away hungry. We all thank you, Mrs. Avillion, Mrs. Bogar and Mrs. Spotts.

The puppies hit the ground running. It was an enjoyable stake. Knob Mountain Nomad, callname Ray, setter male handled by Mike Spotts, won the top spot. Big Run Rebel (Spike), setter male handled by Andy Bogar, and Luna, German Shorthair handled by Tom Davis, closed out the placements.

The Walking Shooting Dog had dogs from New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Virginia. The blue was won by Grouse Ridge Gambler, handled by Mike Spotts. The red was won by Pirate’s Mean Louise,  a Virginia dog, was handled by her owner Dennis Kivikko. The yellow went to Oscar Robinson, handled by owner Albert Gehm from New York.

The Walking Derby was run next and all placed dogs had acceptable bird work, and their races were impressive. Dean Avillion ran two dogs in this stake, placing them both. Penny had four finds to place first, and Chloe had one find to place second. Both had nice ground races. Mack placed third for Mike Spotts. He showed a lot of potential.

We woke up Sunday to a very heavy ground fog. It delayed the start for about two and a half hours. Everyone had breakfast, drank coffee and told dog stories while we waited for the fog to clear. Awarded first place was Bill, pointer male handled by his owner Roger Dvorak. He had three finds and one divided find with a nice race.

Second place went to Big Time Paladin, setter male handled by owner Brent Neely. He had two finds and ran a nice race. Third was Jet, handled by Alex Smith for Calico Kennels. He had one find with a relocation and also had a forward race. Alex’s mother Sheila came down from New York to watch the dogs run and also babysat.

Marty Festa and I judged the Puppy Stake. We had to replace judges due to a cancellation of one of them. Mike Fox and Ernie Saniga judged the Walking Shooting Dog and Derby. Ernie agreed to judge the night before; he got me out of a bind. I can’t thank both of them enough. On Sunday the judges were Jeff Currier and Andy Bogar. I asked Andy if he would judge on Sunday and he accepted. I know all their decisions were well accepted both days.

Dean Avillion and Marty Zukovich planted quail through the trial. Zukovich Game Birds supplied the good flying quail for this trial.

Thanks to all who participated at this trial — the volunteers, handlers, judges, from near and far who pitched in to give a helping hand wherever it was needed. Have a safe and fun filled season.
