Hubbard, Tex. — The Hill County Bird Dog Club and the Heart O’Texas Field Trial Club held their one-day back-to-back spring trials the weekend of April 22-23 at the P-3 Porter Ranch in Hubbard, Tex.

The ranch has been home to many field trials throughout the years and we have spent countless weekends enjoying the fine grounds and amenities that made for successful and enjoyable events.

Unfortunately, progress has come to call.

Four hundred and twenty acres of the ranch have recently been sold. And to make matters worse, this acreage contains the clubhouse and parking area. We’re hopeful that we will still be able to retain the use of the remainder of the ranch and plans can be made to rebuild the facilities at a new location.

Finding field trial grounds in Texas has always been a challenge. There are no state grounds to be had. Trialers have always had to rely on the generosity of private landowners. That being said, the trial went off without a hitch.

We were blessed with cooler than normal temperatures on Saturday that had many folks searching their campers for heavier jackets. Sunday was a bit warmer and made for a pleasant day.

As always, there are many people to thank. Brent Murphy, a recent transplant to Texas from his native state of Georgia, judged the whole trial. It was a pleasure to welcome him to our area. Veteran trainer Frankie Ford joined Brent in judging the Shooting Dog Stakes. Dickie Sorrell, who wore many hats over the weekend, was the co-judge for the Derby Stakes. They rode hard and did a great job. Their hard work is much appreciated.

Dickie also supplied the trial grounds and birds. He laid out the continuous courses and was there to marshal and make sure no one wandered off. What would we do without him? Ray Black and Jim Baker handled dog wagon duties. Royce Gustafson was on hand to supplement the birds and shuttle dogs when needed. Charles Phillips, a recent returnee to our area, came out both days and helped keep everyone fed. We’re happy to have him back in the fold. And I would be remiss if I didn’t personally thank Ray Black for bringing the donuts and fried pies each morning.

Spring in Central Texas always comes suddenly and this year was no exception. Everything seemed to green up, leaf out and blossom overnight. As a result visibility was restricted and scenting conditions were off. Add the multiple fronts that passed through over the weekend and the dogs were challenged to the max.

But you can’t keep a Texas bird dog down for long. Every dog placed had positive quality bird work.

Congratulations to all!
