Lundy's Red Bull First in the Open Shooting Dog Stake

Salem, Neb. — The Husker Bird Dog Club held its fall trial November 25-26 at Pat McInteer’s Hilltop Farm in Salem, Neb. This date worked well; we had a good entry, and for the first time in several years we didn’t get rained on! We had contestants from four different states, and a couple of new field trialers.

Despite the pleasant weather, birds were tough to find in the  Open All-Age. Sean and Deb Hauser’s young pointer male Erin’s Kentucky Moonshine won the stake on the merits of an excellent up-front all-age race. Greg Sand’s setter female Traveler’s High Point garnered second with a stylish find. Steve Auxier’s Working Class rounded out the placements.

In the Open Derby, birds were still tough to come by The Derbies were placed on race. Nemaha Rio, pointer male owned and handled by Pat McInteer, ran a big forward race with a big finish. Millstar’s Saltire, Vizsla male in the capable hands of Laura Miller, ran a good race, hunting all the right places to earn second. Gambler’s All In, pointer female owned and handled by Jerry Alden, ran a fancy eye-catching race to finish third.

Sunday morning brought the Open Shooting Dog. Although we could hear quail calling, and rode some up, they were still tough to get pointed. Veteran Vizsla male Lundy’s Red Bull dug up three birds for owner Laura Miller. Traveler’s Split Rail, setter male, scored a stylish find for owner Greg Sand. On the basis of a pleasing forward race, Nemaha Cinch, pointer male, completed the placements for owner Pat McInteer.

Late afternoon on Sunday, we ran another Derby. As is often the case, conditions changed like the flip of a switch. Every dog in the stake pointed birds.

Redneck Harddrive, pointer female, ran an extreme all-age race, punctuated by two covey finds. Gambler’s All In, pointer female, nailed five coveys with great style. Millstar’s Lion Rampant, vizla male, ran a good forward race with two finds for third. Rampart is owned by Mike Chowning of Auburn, Neb., competing in his first field trial. Congratulations, Mike!

The club appreciates the support of all in attendance.

Many thanks to Jerry Alden, Jason and Trisha Babbel for filling in to judge due to injury and last-minute travel changes.

Much appreciation to Terry Hansen for covering the dog wagon and bird planting duties.

Kelly Babbel deserves not only thanks, but much recognition for a delicious pork loin dinner and hearty lunches.

We are grateful to Pat for allowing us the use of his excellent grounds.
