In the end it is up to the man what he becomes and none of those other things matter.  In horses, dogs, and men, it is character that counts. —Louis  L'Amour

It is with great sadness that we write of the loss of our dear friend, Jerry Erickson of Santa Ana, Cal., on June 21. He was preceded by the loss of his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Miye, last December.

“Jerry and Miye owned Ch. Rikki’s Rockin Rik, among others, and were avid supporters of the sport of field trialing and bird dogs.

“He died peacefully in his sleep after an extended bout with pneumonia. His infectious smile, outgoing personality, and wit will be sorely missed in our house. Jerry, Miye, and Rik are together once more.” — Jan Corbitt and Ron Bader.

“Jerry was born in Thief River Falls, Minn., on July 27, 1939. He was raised in Des Moines, Ia.

“Jerry served in the U.S. Navy out of high school and his career after that included North America Rockwell and Ford Aerospace where he was a director of logistics, and involved in international marketing and international program management.

“After his service his work led him to Southern California, with two-year stints in El Paso, Tex., Germany, and Spain.

“Jerry was introduced to field trials by his son, Terry.  His first dog was Ch. Horizon’s A J that came from Terry’s breeding as well as many of his earlier dogs.

“Jerry bred his good female RU-CH Johnny’s Rockin Rikki to Ch. Tekoa Mountain Patriot and that produced his best field trial dog, Ch. Rikki’s Rockin Rik, and Hal Meyer’s multiple champion Rikki’s Rockin On.” — Terry Erickson.

Jerry bought some land, calling it Setter Springs Ranch, in Maricopa, Cal. He and Terry began the Setter Springs Field Trial Club. Soon after, he made certain it became available as one of the premier venues for Regions 11 and 12 field trials. He generously let participants use all available facilities and he himself did tractor work to make the grounds more suitable. The grounds were used for the California Chukar Championship, the California Bird Dog Championship, and other trials until he later sold it.

“As an active patron he handled his own dogs and more recently had me develop and campaign his setters. Most notable was Ch. Rikki’s Rockin Rik which qualified for the National Championship in 2015.

“He was a fair and very loyal owner who stuck with and believed in his animals.” — Sheldon Twer.

“Jerry had a full, successful and happy life with his family, travel, bird dogs, many friends, and other pastimes.

“Jerry went to be with his beloved Miye who preceded him on her journey six months ago. He will be sadly missed by his sons Terry W. Erickson (Katie), Randy Erickson (Terry), two grandchildren, Samantha and Michael Erickson, and lots of family and friends. We’re all going to miss Jerry so much.” — Katie Quarton.

A memorial service will be held August 12 at 1:00 p. m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4101 E. Nohl Ranch Road, Anaheim Hills, Cal.
