Regina, Va. — The Lancaster County Field Trial Association ran its spring trial on January 13. The Lancaster trial has been a regular event in Lancaster County, Va., since the early 1960s. They began holding U. S. Complete trials in the 1990s.

The trial’s home in recent years has been the Beane Farm in Lancaster. The grounds are open with long agricultural field edges and maintained cover fields with feed patches and native grasses.

The morning began with a light cold rain; the day cleared to be overcast and chilly.

The Winners

Friends of the club, Johnny Lewis and Arnold Ripley, judged the puppies. The winner was Gray’s Fire Down Below, setter male which ran in the first brace of the morning. He was eye-catching  moving and showed an intelligent ground race. “Dante” is owned by Forrest Gray. Monster Jam, another setter male, owned by Jameson Crandall, was awarded second. German Shorthair female Rainader Engel v Oben was third for owner Christine Balderson.

Ray Rinker and Brandon Johnson judged the Amateur Derby and Shooting Dog. Ringo’s Sweet Heart, pointer female owned and handled by Verlene Stephenson, had three finds with great style and a forward, biddable run to be awarded first in the Amateur Derby. Placed second was Mob Jack Mae, setter female owned by Arnold Ripley, Jr. Mae had four enthusiastic bird contacts. Odin Fearless Warhound, German Shorthair male owned by Kelsi Jewell, won third. Odin had one steady find.

Sweethill Peace Pipe, pointer female owned by Mitchell Forrester and handled by James Crandall, won the Amateur Shooting Dog with three spaced finds and a classy, strong ground race. Quinton Oak Abby earned second with four finds and an extreme ground race. Abby is owned by Johnny Lewis. Third placed Lancaster’s Rolling Rex, owned by James Crandall, had four finds and time was called well before the finish.

A Thursday night drawing at the home of Mitchell and Sue Forrester is always a cordial event.

The club drew 34 dogs while everyone in attendance enjoyed the dinner and company. Thanks to the Forresters for hosting the drawing, each of the judges, participants, landowner, and Bert Wright for providing and planting birds.

Thanks to Purina and Garmin for their support of the U. S. Complete Shooting Dog Association.
