Field Trial Report

Lasalle Brittany Club

By Donna Janulis | Nov 09, 2018

Danville, Ill. — The Lasalle Brittany Club held their October 20-21 field trial under nice fall conditions at the Middlefork Recreation Area in Danville, Ill.

Like most successful field trials, without a supply of willing helpers this event would not have achieved the level of success, with some of the willing helpers from outside the Lasalle Club family. Among these were volunteer bird planters, dog wagon drivers, and most notably food preparers/servers that prepared a great Saturday evening dinner for all the judges and participants.

A big thanks to the judges sacrificing personal time and sitting in the saddle for extended periods of time to judge all the dogs’ performances and awarding them the appropriate placement.

About the only negative part of this completion is the poor connection between the Illinois DNR and the Field Trial Clubs of Illinois on grounds preparation and maintenance to achieve grounds that will present a dog in the environment (all-age and shooting dog) that optimizes the dog’s ability.

In the case of Middlefork, the cover was excessive and the courses were modified, without communication to the clubs, eliminating some strategic land that would have improved performances. This has to be addressed before future events are scheduled.

With field trials at a disturbing negative trend in attendance, and Lasalle’s trial just preceding the Gun Dog Nationals in Ionia, Mich., it was appreciative for all the attendees including our two pro handlers,, Bob Burchett and Chad Holman for bringing the entries needed to make this competition a success.
