Field Trial Report

Maine Bird Dog Club

By Bruce Burnell | Jul 13, 2018

Brownfield, Me. — The Maine Bird Dog Club held its spring Mother’s Day trial the week- end of May 12-13. Entries were up again this year, with entries from all over the Northeast. The weather held out as showers were predicted. The club put up the big tent with the help of the early arrivals. The rain stayed away and we had excellent conditions to run dogs.

As with any organization the support of its membership is crucial. John Short, Sr. had things running smoothly and had handlers and judges (Bill Page and Sam Jackson) on the line at 7:30 a. m. for the breakaway of the Clifton Hale-Garfield Wall Open Derby Classic. The winner was Kalamity Cinder, Irish setter owned and handled by Deb Sloan of North Monmouth, Me. Second was Stokely B Phoebee, setter female handled by Jamie Lietch of Derby, Vt. Stokely B Annie, setter female handled by Tony Bly of Milan, N. H., placed third.

The Michael S. Robinson Open Puppy started at 8:00 a. m. on the separate puppy course. Kellie Short of Buxton, Me., placed Paucek’s Little Tommy Tucker first. Calamy’s Soul Man, handled by Cal Robinson of Biddeford, Me., earned second. Third went to Wild Apple Siri, handled by Eric Rizza of Georgetown, Mass. Judges for the stake were Maryann Day of Eliot, Me., and Terri Plummer of Lyman, Me.

The Open Shooting Dog followed the Open Derby on the main course judged ably by Deb Kennedy of Hanover, N. H., and John Short, Sr. from Acton, Me. Stoke’s Willie B, setter male handled by Tony Bly, was awarded first. Stokely’s Frankie B, setter male also handled by Tony, placed second. Third went to Wizard’s Albannach Drummer, handled by Jim Hathaway of North Falmouth, Mass.

Sunday brought the running of the Bernie Murray Amateur Shooting Dog Stake in memory of longtime field trialer Bernie Murray. This is always a very competitive stake with many of the cover dog circuit top dogs being entered. The winner, no stranger to the winners’ circle, was Stokely’s Frankie B, setter male handled by Bernie’s grandson Lloyd Murray of Stark, N. H. Second went to Ledge Hill Chippewa, setter male handled by Jim Levesque of Salem, Mass. Third was Long Gone Studly, setter male handled by Lloyd Murray. Judges for the stake were Paige Davis of North Berwick, Me., and Cal Robinson of Biddeford, Me.

In Sunday’s Open Derby, judged by Tony Bly and Lloyd Murray, first went  to Rock Solid Casey and second went to Lightning Flash Georgi, both setter females handled by Douglas Dix of Whitingham, Vt. Paige Davis of North Berwick, Me., placed her setter female Popgun third.

The last stake of the trial was the Amateur Puppy. Paucek’s Little Tommy Tucker earned first, followed by Wild Apple Hard Cider for second handled by Don Keddy down from Hemminford, QC, Canada. Third place went Ivywild, setter female handled by Paige Davis. Judges for this stake were John Short, Sr. and Robert Jackson.

Thank you to all who helped with the trial. We had a good weekend with all who attended seemingly enjoying the event and watching stylish, well trained bird dogs do what they love.
