McAdam, N. B. — The Miss Leslie Anderson Open Derby Classic and Cronk Farm Puppy Classic were held on October 5 in McAdam, New Brunswick. These stakes were traditionally held in Debec, N. B., as part of the International Amateur Woodcock Championship festivities.

We had a nice entry of sixteen Derbies and ten puppies for the respective stakes.

In the Miss Leslie Derby Classic,  the first and second place dogs, Magic Mist Carolina and Paucek’s Jordi, were braced together.  Jordi stopped at 5 with a woodcock pinned near the course for handler Kellie Short to flush and fire. Both dogs were fast and fancy as they crossed the power line and through the back side of the course. Carolina’s bell fell silent well to the left of the horseshoe turn at 15. After a 10-minute search, scout Bruce Mueller found Carolina in the tall understory and handler Joe Dahl put a woodcock to flight. Third place Paucek’s Little Tommy Tucker had a woodcock find near time on the stinky moose course. Tucker’s race was a bit more erratic and wide on the corners.

Other dogs with bird work were bracemates Bear River Victory (Bob Little) and Long Gone Hatfield (Deb Kennedy).

The Maritime Bird Dog Club wishes to thank John Lockerbie of Ruffed Grouse Society Canada for donating a beautiful knife to the winner. Also a big thanks to John Day of SportDog Canada for donating a beeper collar to the second place dog.

Taking the blue ribbon in the Cronk Farm Puppy Classic was Wild Apple Snake Charmed, handled by Craig Doherty. The fancy white and orange pointer female had a forward race and took a woodcock for a ride at 17. Cairds You’re So Vain (Little), white and liver pointer female, had a nice forward biddable race. Third place went to Deb’s McKeachie Road (Kennedy), white and orange setter female with a fast and snappy race but out of pocket at times. This little firecracker was fun to watch.

A fourth place went to Cora, white and orange Brittany female handled by first time trialer Carlene Brooks. Cora ran a forward race and stayed busy for her 20 minutes.

We wish to thank Justin Neill of Saint John, N. B.,  and Leonard Sinclair of St. Andrews, N. B., for walking all day and judging these Derbies and puppies.
