Michigan Open Shooting Dog Championship Judges Announced

By Al Mannes | Mar 01, 2018

Ionia, Mich.—Everything is rounding nicely into place for April’s Michigan Open Dog Shooting Championship. Chairman Jim Cipponeri has released the names of the four judges involved with the Derby and Championship. The contingent has a decidedly Italian tint as well as a little international flavor but, most importantly, they bring a deep reservoir of experience not only as judges but handlers, and all are quite familiar with the Ionia field trial grounds.

The Championship is pleased to welcome back Kevin Stuart of Schenectady, N. Y., who did an outstanding job as a judge last year. He’ll be joined by Dan Battistella of Ottawa, Ontario who judged the Derby trial in 2017. This year’s Derby will welcome two Michiganders — Blake Rizzo of Ortonville and German Shorthair handler extraordinaire Dan DiMambro of Le Roy.

The week long trial is set to begin on Monday, April 16, with the Derby followed the next day by the Championship. Last year’s winning dog and handler will no doubt be heard from again. Shawn Kinkelaar and Chelsea’s Thunder Bolt are poised to defend their title. Just as in every year, we are expecting to see the greatest shooting dogs anywhere go at it hammer and tongs. We invite everyone to join in the excitement.
