Willisville, Ill. — The Mid-South Brittany Open All-Age Championship has survived several organizations stepping up to the plate to preserve its championship status. This is the third year the Illinois Brittany Club has taken over its running from the Southern Illinois Brittany Club which took it from the now defunct Mid-South Brittany Championship Association.

Twenty-three Brittanys came to the line to compete under the watchful eyes of Judges Jarrett Bell and Allison Bell of Troy, Mo. They were very attentive and plowed through the mud with the rest of the riders.

While the mud took its toll on the horses, the dogs did not have any trouble managing the three one-hour courses of the Captain Unit at Pyramid State Recreation Area. Cha Hill and his limited staff continue to improve the grounds. Birds were plentiful with almost all dogs having some bird contact. Unfortunately, the deer were also present and we lost a few dogs on deer, but all were accounted for at the end of the two days of running.

This year’s champion was Castaway Wilson, eight-year-old white and orange Brittany male owned by Tim Huglen of Rochester, Minn., and handled by Tom Tracy, Jr. He had multiple finds and a good forward race. No one was surprised when he was named the champion.

Named runner-up was Kashmir, five-year-old white and orange Brittany male owned by Dr. Robert Rankin of Edmond, Okla., and handled by Tom Tracy, Jr. “Cash” was really on top of his game this week as he also placed in the regional trial over the weekend.

J B W’s Levi the Lionheart and Jac’s Original Spice placed third and fourth for owners Joe Williams and Kathy Gulembo and Cynthia Cropek. Joe handled his own dog and Spice was under the direction of Chad Holman.

All four placements qualified for the ABC National All-Age Championship.

Southern Illinois is noted for its strong amateurs. We want to thank Dave Capstick, Kent Patterson, Joe Williams, and Ray Trimble who joined professionals Chad Holman and Tom Tracy, Jr. in running their dogs.

Once again, Nestlé Purina sponsored this Championship with financial resources as well as dog food. Without their support we would not be able to put on a quality event.
