Conway, Ark. — The weather was not kind to participants of the fall Mid-State field trial which was held October 26-27.

Friday, October 25, was a cold wet day and the running was cancelled.

Saturday started the same way with wet and cold conditions, but by 1:00 p. m. the weather cleared some and the trial was able to begin.

The Open Shooting Dog ran first. Two outstanding judges, Steve Messick of Greenbrier, Ark., and Jim Martin of Wooster, Ark., rode the judicial saddles. Their decision was well received.

Outer Edge Spirit, pointer female owned and handled by J. D. Smith of Jackson, Ark., was declared the winner with a nice forward race and one perfect find. Jill Smith did a fine job of scouting Spirit. Birds were scarce when Joyce Taylor of Paron, Ark., turned her new charge Absolute Tornado loose. “Rod” ran a powerful forward race, but alas, no birds. The Bear Creek Lightning, a stout pointer male owned and handled by Johnny Van Horn of Dardanelle, Ark., was placed third with a nice race.

Absolute Diva was the tough luck dog of the stake for Johnny Taylor of Paron, Ark., with a good find shortly after the breakaway and a good race, but she was out of sight and out of judgment at time and the retrieval unit was called for. Diva was found at the top of Dead Horse Curve some 15 minutes later high and tight on her second covey.

The weather totally cleared Sunday morning and a gorgeous day greeted all participants for the Amateur Shooting Dog. The decision was made early to run the four braces straight through with no break. Two exceptional judges were the decision makers for these eight outstanding competitors, Gordon Hazlewood of Dardanelle, Ark., and Harold Woodward of Vilonia, Ark.

The weather was perfect, and fall had just arrived with a splash of color everywhere. Snow Drifter, handsome near white pointer male, put on quite a show for his proud owner Rita Ornsby of Greenbrier, Ark. “Chap” was always forward making several long showy casts. The thing you noticed most was the rapport between handler and dog. There was never any doubt that when he made a strong forward cast that took him out of sight in the heavy cover that he would always show back on the front. Rita’s scout and husband, Johnny O., had a horse issue and could not complete his scouting duties and was replaced by Johnny Taylor for the last thirty minutes of the brace. Chap had one immaculate find and that, coupled with his outstanding race, made him a strong winner. Joyce Taylor, again with her new dog Absolute Tornado, had a good performance with two nice finds. “Rod” gave a good accounting of himself on the ground but showed the effects of being new to his handler. Overall a good outing for this new team for second place. Absolute Diva, a proven performer on the grounds with two runner-up championships, gave her usual strong performance, but no birds. Her race was strong enough to garner her third place for her owner-handler Johnny Taylor.

This was a trial with a lot of camaraderie. Everyone at the trial helped in some way. Steve Messick and Les Rowell drove the dog wagon and help was everywhere on the courses from all participants.

Camp Robinson has another strong bird population; area manager Josh Fortner has done a great job of preparing the area, for which we are grateful.
