Hollywood Bo First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake

Bloomingdale, Ohio — Cool spring weather, bobwhites whistling, great bird dogs and a track that has been laid out to show a dog like nowhere else east of the Mississippi once again hosted the 10th annual Mingo Classic and 7th annual Bill Merrifield Memorial Amateur All-Age Stake.

Yes, we are talking about the Mingo Sportsman Club located in Eastern Ohio. This premier dog training area is utilized by its members to train, condition and hunt throughout the year and is quickly becoming one of the nation’s most sought-after national and regional championship venues east of the Mississippi River and referred to as Ohio’s version of the Dakotas, aka East Dakota.

Proceeds from all field trial events and the support of the 1000+ members of the Mingo Sportsman Club continue to be reinvested into this amazing track.

Led again by trial Chairman Tim McClurg, he made a special speech in honor of Bob Bickerstaff, one of Mingo’s longtime supporters and volunteers who lost his battle with cancer. Bob, also known as Harley, never owned a dog but he came out and supported every dog event from set-up to tear down. Bob will always be remembered and missed.

All three stakes were judged by Jim Rowell and Justin Allen, both from Ohio. Awarded first in the Amateur All-Age (7 entries) was Stone Free B, setter male owned by Marion Brown. Placed second was Mac’s Hi Oh Silver, pointer male owned by Tim McClurg. Third was Hollywood Madam, pointer female owned by Regis Linn.

The Amateur Shooting Dog followed with twelve dogs competing. Earning first was Hollywood Bo, setter male owned and handled by Regis Linn.

Second was Double M’s White On Rice, German Shorthair male owned by Meredith Mays and handled by Cliff Mesnard. Third was Mac’s Silver Chief, owned and handled by Tim McClurg.

The Open Derby (eight entries) was the final stake.  Looking at the potential of these young dogs is no easy task but when it was over there were three fine choices. First was Mac’s Graceland, pointer female owned and handled by Tim McClurg. Second was Backcountry Bruiser, pointer male owned and handled by Chris Catanzarite. Mac’s Silver Chief, pointer male owned by Tim McClurg, was third. We look forward to seeing these three in future broke dog stakes.

A big thank you to our sponsor Purina for supporting this event and to trial chairman and marshal Tim McClurg for his work to make this year’s trial a success. He was accompanied by several members of the Mingo Sportsman Club bird dog committee (Bill Monk, Allen Bickerstaff, Brian Biggo, Jess Brown, Cliff Mesnard and other members of Mingo). On behalf of the Mingo Sportsman Club and our members we want to say thanks to all of the participants who competed in this year’s event and the spectators who came to watch and learn what this great sport is all about.
