Another field trial season is in the books for the Minnesota-Wisconsin cover trial clubs and as is tradition it is time to acknowledge our top shooting dogs and Derbies of the year.

These awards are given to the dogs earning the most points in one field trial season  at trials held by the Minnesota Grouse Dog Association, Moose River Grouse Dog Club, and the Chippewa Valley Grouse Dog Association.

This year’s winner of the Open Shooting Dog was Over The Hill Patty, white and black pointer female owned by Rod Lein of Chippewa Falls, Wis. Patty was last year’s Derby of the Year. She also placed first in three trials and second in one with multiple grouse finds in each venue. She is out of Beaver Creek Lucy and by Go Johnny Go.

The Amateur Award belongs to Show Girl, five-year-old white and black setter female owned by David and Rochel Moore of Big Lake, Minn. She won two championships in 2016-2017. Show Girl is out of Blacksmith’s Diva and was sired by Shadow Oak Bo.

The Open Derby competition this year was so close it ended in a tie.

Northern Lights Leo (FDSB 1667835), setter male by Keystone’s Red Recession — Abigale, bred by Ed Graddy of Rochester, Minn., is owned  and handled by Sig Degitz of Lake Nebagamon, Wis.

Northwoods Gucci (FDSB 1661615), setter female by Erin’s Hidden Shamrock — Northwoods Chardonnay, was bred and is owned by Dr. Paul Hauge of Centuria, Wis., and handled by Jerry Kolter.

Leo (Opie) and Gucci are both great young dogs and battled all year to end in a tie. Leo placed last fall with a third  place as a very young Derby and went on to win two trials this spring, the only two in which he was entered. Gucci had a great spring, earning first in one trial and second place in the other two.

Amateur Derby winner was Northern Lights Leo.
