By Mike Husenits | Nov 08, 2017

Marienville, Pa. — The AFTCA National Amateur Grouse Championship was contested October 27-29 over multiple courses in the Allegheny National Forest near Marienville, Pa. The entry of 39 was scrutinized by Judges Tony Bly of Milan, N. H., and John Malone of Bolton, Conn.

Weather conditions were less than ideal and birds were hard to find. A worthy champion emerged in Blast Zone, three-year-old white and orange setter male owned by Richard Brenneman of Port Matilda, Pa., and Bob Watts of Millville, Pa., and handled to a superior ground heat and a single grouse find and one unproductive by Thor Kain of Carbondale, Pa. Runner-up was Grouse Trails Pride, six-year old white and black pointer female owned and handled by John McKellop of Guys Mills, Pa., to a forward hunting effort and a single find on woodcock.
