Field Trial Report

National Brittany Open Grouse Championship Association

By Charles Langstaff | Sep 27, 2019
Locust Run Shelby First in the Open Shooting Dog Stake

Meredith, Mich. — We were able to get started on time with dry and hot conditions. Birds were co-operating; they were seen or heard on most braces.

We took a break at lunchtime to run a Junior Handler Stake with most everyone there to watch these youngsters having fun with dad’s and grandpa’s dogs in a birdfield.

In the Open Shooting Dog, first was awarded to Scott Chaffee and Locust Run Shelby. Marc Forman earned second with Texas Elhew Bodie. Bruce Minard and Bowl of Fire rounded out the placements with third.

We thank Judges Craig Merlington and David Haviland for their time and attention given to each handler and dog.

The Open Derby started Sunday morning with Judges William Nelson and Justin VanBeers in the saddle. After looking at a nice group of youngsters the judges named Shady Hills Savannah first for handler Scott Forman. Craig Merlington and Flash Forward were second. Third was Black Creek Lucy, handled by Richard Hollister.

For the Dave Grissom Brittany Open Shooting Dog, Bruce Barlow and Denise Peters handled the judging. Taking the blue was Ayeries Paladin of Auten, handled by Ray McVeigh, and second was Dogwood’s Dashing Gambler, handled by Robert Bricker.

We would like to thank all our judges for their time and attention they gave to all the dogs.

I mentioned the Junior Handler Stake earlier. We have been running this stake now for enough years that we now have handlers who ran in it running dogs with the adults and doing very well. This year the judges placed Westin, first, Charlotte, second, and Clare, third. I will tell you that the spectators really enjoyed watching these youngsters with their dogs.

I thank my wife Theda for all the work she does getting the food around for the trials and also trying to make sure that all the kids have fun in their stake, along with her helpers Tom and Christy and Bryan Wood.

Thank you all.

Meredith, Mich., August 24
