Reno, Nev. — The weekend of October 21-22 the Nevada Bird Dog Club (NBDC) held its annual trial at the Red Rock field trial grounds outside of Reno, Nev., including the second running of the Kelly’s Rebel Maggie Shooting Dog Classic, a 45-minute stake honoring Sean Kelly’s great shooting dog Kelly’s Rebel Maggie that amassed an incredible record for Sean. She was always a threat, and always garnered a big gallery wanting to see her perform when she was running. It was a sad day in the West when she retired, but her retirement also gave the rest of us a little hope at winning, too.

The NBDC is grateful to all attendees and volunteers who showed up to provide entries, judging, bird planting duties, and general help with everything that went on at this trial to make it the success and fun time that it was. Jarry Walton, Sean Kelly, Kay Kelly, Jared Tappero, Lori Steinshouer, Willie Stevens, Tom Griffin, Hunter Grundmeyer, and others all chipped in to help.

If you’re a regular participant at these weekend trials, you know how it goes: If you don’t enter a dog in a stake, you get elected to judge. Wahoo!

We need to thank all our judges for helping, and volunteering to be drafted at the last minute depending on the stake entries. A special thank you to Lori for not only judging, but rounding up a group of local community help and providing outstanding lunches each day. Lori’s a great cook, and if she’s providing lunches everyone is riding the afternoon braces with a full stomach and a smile on their face.

Doug Steinshouer has been a stalwart in the region for many years and historically put this trial on, and was not feeling well enough to attend this year’s renewal. We missed him and said a prayer for his well being.

The Winners

The winner of the second annual renewal of the Kelly’s Rebel Maggie Shooting Dog Classic was Indian Head Abbigale, veteran pointer female and perennial winner handled by Jared Tappero. Always forward and hunting to the objectives, she handled kindly for Jared, and was rewarded for her efforts.

Second and third place winners were handled by Tom Griffin. Touch’s California Dream, second place, is a young up-and-comer pointer for Tom and was well deserving of his placement. Maybellene, setter female, is from a breeding between To The Point ex Iron Mistress by Jeff Gilbertson, that has gained some notoriety among setter aficionados in the West for producing outstanding bird dogs, garnered third. She’s pretty going and on point, as are all the dogs from this mating.

Jared Tappero had a good day, garnering two placements in the Open All-Age, first place with Indian Head Abbigale and third with Indian Head Outlaw.

Second went to Far West Ridgerunner, handled by Mike Wilkin.

We had some nice young dogs in the two Open Derbies, the highlight of which was Kay Kelly running her Kay’s Last Chance, aka Buddy, in both stakes, and placing second in one of them. It was a treat to see the father and daughter duo handling and scouting together, and provided a glimpse of the future of trialing out west.

Other winners are appended.

Purina provided welcome support for the trial with dog food for the winners, which is always appreciated. We can’t say enough about how much their support means to our field trial community.
