Field Trial Report

New York Grouse Club

Indian Creek Bocephus First in the Open Shooting Dog Stake

Oxford, N. Y. — The last few years there haven’t been many trials in the Southern Tier of New York. Once a trial-rich region, but lately they have slowly disappeared.

Determined to change that, Pat Cooke of Rochester, N. Y., took it upon himself to secure grounds and put on a first- class trial. He made a call to Peter and Katie Flanagan and they graciously offered their beautiful grounds in Oxford, N. Y. The date of May 20-21 was set.

No trial can run without help. Pat did a large share of the work but several others helped as well. Thanks are in order for Mike Oxenrider, Jeremy Estep, Bill Ballin, Jim McDuff, Joe Malone Deb Nihart, Lynn Cook, Greg Fried and several others who pitched in and did everything from saddling horses to planting birds. All of their help made the trial run smoothly and without issue.

Pro handlers Garry Malzone and his trusty scout Jillian Stuhr, Marc and Scott Forman and Robert Ecker supported the trial with their entries but we also had a good showing from amateurs. The stakes were competitive all weekend with handlers exhibiting sportsmanship and camaraderie, exactly how a field trial should be.

The Winners

The Open Puppy, the first stake of the weekend, got underway at 7:30 a. m. Saturday morning.

Mike Oxenrider handled his puppy Asper Hill Pippi to the blue ribbon with a fast and fancy race. Placed second was Cat, a smooth and big going female handled by Garry Malzone. Rounding out the placements was Shady Hills Thor, a pup that runs to the limit and was handled by Scott Forman.

The Open Derby ran on Saturday. First place went to Young Grouse Freddie (M. Forman), big strong setter male which ran to the front with three well placed finds. Blac (S. Forman) had a nice race and maturely handled bird work to win second place. River’s Edge Molly, Pat Cooke’s hard charging young setter, took third with her lightning fast ground speed and beautiful pointing style.

In Saturday’s Open Shooting Dog,

Indian Creek Bocephus (Malzone) won the stake in convincing fashion with a big forward race, and when he didn’t reappear he would be found standing a bird, four times in total. He took edges, hunted cover and ran with style. All In (Kain) was big from the breakaway, taking the edge the whole way out in the second field and disappearing into the woods. He finished with three nice finds to earn the red ribbon. Third went to Herbie’s Asta La Vista (S. Forman) which ran with speed and enthusiasm and had pretty bird work.

In Sunday’s Open Shooting Dog, I ndian Creek Bocephus (Malzone) was back in first place with an almost identical performance to the day before. He carded three finds and tore the course up in his search for birds. Second went to Hifive’s Passin Time (Malzone ) which laid to the front and was found on point with breathtaking style six different times. Boston (S. Forman) scorched to the front off the breakaway with fancy style. He finished with three mannerly finds.

In Sunday’s Open Derby, Bo of Piney Woods (Ecker) won the blue with a fancy, forward race. He exhibited exceptional manners on his birds and handled with ease. Second place found River’s Edge Molly (Cooke) back in the ribbons with her hard charging race and beautiful bird work on display once again. Third place honors went to Indian Creek Lefty (Malzone) which ran with a high cracking tail and good application. He had several bird contacts and finished strong.
