Dresden, Ohio — The 2019 running of the National German Shorthaired Pointer Association Ohio Championships began on April 22 at the Tri-Valley Wildlife Area near Dresden, Ohio.

The grounds were in excellent shape for the running and visibility was great for watching big-running dogs compete.

The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Ohio thanks our judges, Chris Streitenberger and Helmut Schoen (Open Shooting Dog and All-Age), Jimmy Wallace and Joe Orndorff  (Amateur Shooting Dog and Open Derby Classic)  for their full attention to the field. We appreciate their time in the saddle. Many competitors expressed their appreciation for their positive and thoughtful attention. Their decisions were well received.

Our successful trial was made possible by the many members of our club who contributed their time and talent for our event. As with all field trials, the work of our dedicated committee, our supportive owners and handlers along with our key sponsors make things run like a well oiled machine.

I would especially like to thank our secretary, Jen Goodall, for her untiring dedication to the success of our trials.

Our bird planters Dennis Meinke, Russ Roth, and Chris Young did a terrific job of planting birds and keeping the trial moving.

Evening dinners of chicken, tacos and pork ribs were catered by Bill’s BBQ of Zanesville, Ohio and enjoyed by all in attendance.

Good weather favored the week, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s, except for some rain delays during the Derby, including a heavy downpour in the morning.

Once again, Purina and Greg Blair are to be thanked for the continued support of our Championships and field trial events by providing Purina Pro Plan performance for our winners. Also, a big thanks to SportDog and Jim Morehouse for providing a collar for the Amateur Shooting Dog winner.

The Winners

Hi N’s Hasty Matilda won the Open Shooting Dog for owner Hank Lewis of Louisville, Ohio. “Matty” was expertly handled by Dan DiMambro, and applied herself to the course like the veteran trial dog that she is. She was always forward seeking objectives and was rewarded with finds at 8, 15, 30, 37, 45, and 49. Her bird work was stylish and solid.

Riden High Rudy, owned by Ray Nelson of Rio Linda, Cal., was the runner-up. Rudy was expertly handled by Dan DiMambro. Rudy’s application to the course was a pleasure to watch and was rewarded with multiple finds. While beautiful on his birds, he wasn’t quite as sharp as the winner.

Open All-Age Championship featured winners of three National Championships and once again we thank the owners and handlers who made this renewal a success.

This year’s winner of the Open All-Age was Rock River’s U Can’t Handle This, owned by Rick Heller of Wisconsin and handled by Dan DiMambro. “Dually” is this year’s current National Champion and continued his winning ways at the tender age of three years. Runner-up was Joke’s On You, owned by Steve Erikson of Michigan and handled by Chris Goegan. “Buddy” rendered an excellent, stylish and a far-reaching forward race combined with his three finds.

The judges of the Amateur Shooting Dog Championship had plenty of fine dogs to watch, but they got separated at 30 and each had a dog they liked and were unable to come to a decision. After calling back Chicoree’s Jake’s Bonnie, owned and handled by Fred Ryan of Lima, Ohio, and Hi N’s Hasty Matilda, owned and handled by Hank Lewis, they were able to come to a decision.

Bonnie was named the 2019 Ohio Amateur Champion with her consistent race and four finds in the 30-minute run- off. “Matte” once again showed her attractive style and four finds giving her the runner-up spot.

The winner of the Derby Classic and the Jay Ford Schnackel Memorial Rotating Trophy was Wingfield’s Remily, owned by Don Collier of Georgia and handled by Dan DiMambro.

Madi May, owned by Scott Snyder and handled the Mike Petrillo, got the nod for second place.

The third place ribbon went to Toby Mr. Personality, owned by Rafael Depetris and handled by Chuck Gonzales.

The Derby featured many exciting new prospects for future championships.
