Chasehill Little Speck Wins 43rd Renewal

North American Woodcock Futurity

By Russell Ogilvie | Nov 06, 2019
Futurity Winners. Front (l-r): John Stolgitis with Chasehill Little Speck, Donald Cluney with Grouse Hill Pepper, Steve Forrest with Wynot Pete and Russell Ogilvie with Springbrook Sweet T. Standing: Judges Leonard Sinclair and Mike Flewelling.

McAdam, N. B. — With the conclusion of the North American Woodcock Championship, we shifted into another gear.

With  seventeen entries, we went right back into the woods. As with the Championship, birds were at a premium and difficult to get pointed. In fact, we did not have a single dog that had bird work this year which is rare to say the least.

Last year, we had hot and dry conditions with plenty of bird work. This year, we had good temperatures and moisture but the wet spring showed nesting birds did not fare well.

When the last dog was picked up, a lengthy discussion was held between the judges and the trial chairman about what to do. Given the conditions, it was decided that since no dogs had bird work, the best option was to place dogs on race.

Taking the blue ribbon was Chasehill Little Speck (Daddy’s Little Boy Butch ex Porter Meadow Bette), white and liver pointer male owned by Elias Richardson of Uxbridge, Mass., and  Erin Stolgitis of Ashaway, R. I., and handled by John Stolgitis.

Second was awarded to Grouse Hill Pepper (Daddy’s Little Boy Butch ex Grouse Hill Bell), white and orange  pointer female owned by John Capocci of Katonah, N. Y.,  and handled by John Stolgitis.

Earning third was Wynot Pete (Wynot Atom ex Northwoods Maddie), white and black pointer male owned and handled by Steve Forrest of Hampden, Me.

Fourth place went to white and liver  pointer male Springbrook Sweet T (Daddy’s Little Boy Butch ex Porter Meadow Bette), owned and handled by Russell Ogilvie of Waldoboro, Me.

The Maritime Bird Dog Club would like to thank its sponsor, Sportdog Canada for donating a collar to the winner.

We would like to thank our judges, Leonard Sinclair of Bobcabec, New Brunswick and Mike Flewelling of Holden, Me. It wasn’t easy on the dogs and it wasn’t easy on the judges. Our hats are off to them for their effort.

Finally, a thank you  to stake manager Joe Dahl for getting the litters enrolled and taking care of the paperwork to make the Futurity a success.
