Field Trial Report

Ohio Red Setter Club

By Allen Fazenbaker | Jan 12, 2022
Double Deuce Zeke, Second in the Open Shooting Dog Stake.

Rochester Twp, Pa. — Beaver Valley Pointer and Setter Club in Rochester, Pa., was once again the venue for the Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club's three-day trial, with a horseback Shooting Dog stake run on Friday, November 19, in the afternoon, followed by Open and Amateur walking stakes on Saturday and Sunday.

The Beaver Valley grounds are well known to those in the Ohio-Pennsylvania region.  First established in 1949, these grounds have been in continuous use for field trials since that time. Many future champions had their start in local weekend trials, and the Beaver Valley grounds are no stranger to playing a part in those winners.

Weekend trials are the backbone of field trialing, and the Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club appreciates the dedication of the Beaver Valley membership, many of whom turned out to lend a hand with this trial. A special thanks to the Board of Directors for making these grounds available for our sport.

Thanks to our slate of judges, who brought a wealth of experience to the weekend; Joe Camissa, Norm Meeder, Dave Park, Chris Catanzarite, Bob Reynolds DVM, Mike Husenits, Doug McMillen, and Reese Carroll spent some long hours to evaluate the entries. This was Reese Carroll’s first judging assignment, and we thank him and also Doug McMillen for mentoring this young man through the paces.

Also, a huge thank-you to all the helping hands who made this trial a success; Dave Park and Chris Catanzarite for supplying horses, Bob Smith, who planted birds the entire weekend, and Justin Mason and Carrah Thatcher, who assisted with marshalling.

Deb Fazenbaker cooked her trial-famous homemade chili and also added a pot of homemade chicken soup, along with her blueberry dessert. Joe Cammisa made sure everyone had plenty of desserts, including his home-made pizza-fritte, made from a recipe passed down by his grandmother Costantina Cammisa!

Purina, a stalwart sponsor of the Pennsylvania Walking Shooting Dog Association, was also a supporter, and we thank Purina for their continued support. We also wish to thank professional handler Mark Hughes, who is a huge supporter of our weekend trials in this region. These folks are essential to the success of our sport, and much appreciated.

Most importantly, thank you to all the participants who entered dogs; we had a total of 58 entries, a good entry for a late season trial. This trial was a U. S. Complete and Pennsylvania Walking Shooting Dog Association points trial.

And the winners are…

Backcountry Girlfriend took the blue in the Open (Horseback) Shooting Dog Stake, handled by the veteran Chris Catanzarite. Mark Hughes handled Double Deuce Zeke to the second-place spot, followed by Waybetter Butch, handled by his owner, Dave Park.

Saturday morning brought the Open puppies to the line. Anna Lake Klark, setter male owned and handled by Rob Matson, took first with a driving, forward race. Close behind was Backcountry Pure Gold, pointer female handled by Reese Carroll.  Rounding out the placements was Quehanna Mudslide, pointer female handled by Dave Park.

Doug McMillen handled his male pointer Double Deuce Jack to a first-place finish in the Open Derby. Miller's Special Upgrade, pointer female, took second for handler Mark Hughes, who finished the placements with a littermate, Miller's Hopped Up Version.

The Open Shooting Dog was a quality stake with a nice entry of seventeen dogs. Kendal Hills Dawson Creek took the blue for Mark Hughes with a nice showing, a strong forward race, and impeccable manners on his game. Backcountry Girlfriend was close behind, taking the No. 2 spot for her handler Chris Catanzarite. Double Deuce Zeke rounded out the placements for Hughes.

Sunday morning brought the Amateur Puppy to the line; winning the stake was B K Lapaloma Blanca, pointer female, handled by her owner Brooke Lanning.

The Amateur Derby win was garnered by Conneaut Creek Scenic River, red setter male handled by this reporter. Double Deuce Jack took the second-place spot for Doug McMillen, and Eric Munden handled his pointer female Wildland Sweet Caroline to the number three slot.

National Red Setter Field Trial Club former President Jack Carter was an honorable and respected man not only in Tennessee but throughout the East Coast, where he campaigned his beloved red setters, and was an active and stalwart supporter of the Sullivan County (Tenn.) Bird Dog Club. The Amateur Shooting Dog Stake is named in his honor. Taking the blue was Waybetter Butch, handled by Dave Park. A Distant Spec, pointer female, took the number two slot for his handler Eric Munden who also handled the third-place dog, Wildland Warrior.

The Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club is devoted to the Purest Challenge… the promotion and improvement of the red setter as a class shooting dog and hunting companion. There is no better way to improve our breed than competing in all-breed stakes, and that is why this club exists. We appreciate the opportunity to compete with other breeds, and we appreciate the good sportsmanship that was demonstrated this weekend.

Hope to see you in a few months for our spring renewal!
