Inola, Okla. — The Oil Capital fall trial was held  October 8-10 at the Ingersoll Ranch near Inola, Okla. We can’t say enough about our gracious hosts, Kay Ingersoll and daughters Joletta and Wendy. The field trial community is blessed to be able to run trials on this vast venue. There is so much field trial history at this ranch. When the Quail Futurity use to run here with over 100 entries, to the Oklahoma All-Age and Shooting Dog Championships as well as the Oil Capital trials.

Last year the club initiated a bird release program to try to emulate a wild bird trial instead of throw down birds. Even though it was more labor intensive it was well worth the effort. This year we decided to continue with the bird release program. Anticipation was high for many of us because it was the first trial of the season and we wanted to see how our birds were doing.

As you all well know, Mother Nature is sometimes not cooperative with outdoor activities. This was the case this weekend with gusty winds, very dry conditions, and temps that were 20° above normal in the 90s. Dogs could not smell so consequently no birds were pointed. A lot of dogs that had to run an hour in the afternoon were either scratched or picked up early.

All dogs were placed on race. There was a wild covey ridden up as well as a big covey seen by a feeder.

You can’t put on a trial without people and  Oil Capital is a good example of members working cooperatively to make things happen. Jon Humphrey volunteered to chair this trial with Jason Reed taking the entries. Mike Griffin and Barry Moore drove the dog wagon. John Humphrey marshalled with gates being open by Lynn Oxendine, JB Beighle, and your scribe. Also, thanks to Austin Bryant for rounding up my juvenile horse!

Many thanks to our judges, Tony Chism and Jeremy Gulick, for sitting in the saddle for three days in what some people would call undesirable conditions. More like weather for laying on the beach.

Also much appreciation to Purina Pro Plan and Sport Dog for their support. Having their support just adds to the quality of any trial. We all need to support those that supports us!

Part of the great things about a trial is the food. Thank you Chrissie Humphrey, Jon’s better half for making those wonderful box lunches for us. The chicken salad and barbecue sandwiches were wonderful.

Recently we lost two good friends, Warren Henderson who drove our dog wagon and Dr. Kurt Ochsner. Warren was always there the last couple of years helping us by driving the dog wagon. He always had a lot of stories to tell from years past. Five weeks before Kurt went to be with the Lord, he asked me if he and his son Drake could help me put out birds for the release program. It is still a shock to may of us that he is gone. I competed with Kurt in the walking arena for many years in which he always had good dogs and was very competitive. He was always fun to be around. These gentleman will be sorely missed.

Looking forward to seeing everybody in the spring!
