Field Trial Report

Peninsula Bird Hunters Club

By Ashby Morgan | Feb 10, 2020
Mohawk Mill Charmer First in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake; First in the Amateur Derby

Ahoskie, N. C. — The Peninsula Bird Hunters Club held a U. S. Complete Shooting Dog trial on December 7 at Dr. Aubrey Morgan’s farm in Ahoskie, N. C. Thanks to Aubrey and his crew for opening up the grounds, cabin and all of the other amenities for our use. Their pre-release program provided ample birds for most of the trial.

Lee Flanders and his family went above and beyond this year with the fish fry lunch consisting of fried oysters, fried soft crabs, fried fish, hush puppies, sausages, hot dogs and Tired Mama Cake (my favorite). Sharon Townley also made wonderful oyster stew.

Thanks to Jeffrey Smith and George Doyle for judging the field trial. They gave every entry their undivided attention and their decisions were well received. The club is very appreciative of their time.

The Winners

First in the Puppy Stake was Sweetgrass Slim, setter male owned and handled by David Huffine. Slim is a good looking setter that will be seen in the winners’ circle a lot in the future. Southpaw Bootlegger, Weimaraner female owned and handled by Meredith Wadsworth, placed second. Bootlegger ran a strong ground race. This was Meredith’s first U. S. Complete trial and we hope she will be back for more. Third was Beechwood’s She’s All That, owned by Sharon and Phil Townley and handled by Sharon Townley. She had a nice ground race.

In the Derby, first place was Mohawk Mill Charmer, owned by Ashby Morgan and Gary Winall, and handled by Ashby Morgan. Charmer had three finds and a forward ground race. Second was Back Creek Lucy, owned and handled by Steve Graham. Lucy had two finds and a nice ground race. For third place, Sweetgrass Slim was back for owner-handler David Huffine.

First place in the Shooting Dog was again Mohawk Mill Charmer, owned by Gary Winall and Ashby Morgan, and handled by Ashby Morgan. Charmer had three finds and a forward and classy ground race. Second place was Shadow’s Carolina Molly, owned and handled by Verlene Stephenson. Molly had four finds and a strong ground race. Third was Chippoke’s Hoss Man, owned and handled by Lee Flanders. Hoss had a forward race with one find.

We thank Purina for the support of the U. S. Complete Shooting Dog Association as well as all of the handlers and  everyone who helped and supported the trial.
