Hoffman, N. C. — The 102nd renewal of the Pinehurst was held at the Hoffman grounds on March 2-3. The trial was permitted to be held having been snowed out at the scheduled January date.

Conditions were not favorable, with two days of continuous heavy wind with gusts to 30 mph plus.

Enthusiasm was still high even though competing with other trials also running.

This year we added an Open Derby and Amateur Shooting Dog Stake testing participation from low entries that have somewhat eroded and hindered clubs putting on a trial. It helped. In all, 30 participants were drawn and loosed in this prestigious and venerable trial.

Birds were tight and elusive but were still present and observed. The bird program for the past two years has been most successful, and the grounds are in top condition. The 2017-2018 field trial season at Hoffman has been good, as was last year.

Purina again sponsored this trial and their support for this sport is most appreciated. Dog food by Purina was given to those that placed.

Larry McDonald, a Hoffman fixture, provided his service driving the dog wagon, coffee break, and any other advice one might ask of him.

We were honored to have Phil Moser of Climax, N. C., and Fred Potts of Lumberton, N. C., as judges. Also, we were most appreciative of Johnny Atkinson filling in the judicial post for Fred in the Shooting Dog Stake. The judges set a good pace, equally giving attention to each brace.

The Winners

The trial began on Friday with the Open Derby. The winner was Cape Hickory Bucky, owned by David Dale and handled by Mack Hilliard. Taking second was Broken Halo, owned and handled by Virginian Phil Stevenson. Stoney Run’s Dan took third for owner-handler Dennis Snyder.

The Amateur All-Age Stake was won by Mac’s Hi Oh Silver for Tim McClurg, the Ohio sportsman who resides in Hoffman for a large portion of the field trial season. Awarded second was I’m An Amazing Grace for owner-handler Sammy Giddens. Both gave good performances, having range, hunt and rewarded with all in order finds and stylish at flush.

The Amateur Derby again had Sammy Giddens placing, this time in first place with his charge I’m Bud’s Next Generation, a nice promising young dog with lots of style and run. Paul Gadd handled Cape Hickory Bucky for owner David Dale. They garnered second place. This young pointer also has lots of potential, having placed throughout this season.

The Amateur Shooting Dog put on the best show as weather conditions slightly improved. Cavenhaugh’s River Shadow took first place with three large covey finds for owner Ken Cavenhaugh, capably handled by Nan Hilliard. Second was Upper Ten Riley for owner-handler John Adsit, the Vermont sportsman who with wife Gretchen resides in Hoffman for the winter months. Riley was constantly to the front, well handled, having a good performance. Third was Mac’s Hi Oh Silver for owner Tim McClung with a good race and style credited with one limb find.
