Pony Express Trials

Gentry, Mo. — The Pony Express Field Trial Club members — Larry Smith and Linda Smith, Chris Livingston, Sean Hauser, Eddie Berendzen, Kirk Swanson, Terry Doolittle, and Steve Auxier — came together and hosted their fall trial!

This trial was not only highlighted by amazing performances but also maintained the camaraderie that everyone looks forward to each fall at Smith Farms! Thanks to all of the handlers for their support of the Pony Express Club.

Judges for this year’s event were Dr. Pat McInteer, Mr. Tommy Smith and Mr. Tim Thornton. The Pony Express  Club is truly honored to have these fine gentlemen in the judging seats. The judges had many great performances with multiple pieces of bird work! They  noted they enjoyed the field trial, grounds, nice dogs, hospitality from the club and a very competitive field trial!


The Open (shooting dog) Derby featured many commendable performances with Worsham’s Super Sport leading the pack with a nice forward race winning top honors for handler Joe Worsham. Second was Intensive Dark Thirty handled by Steve Auxier credited with a find. Rounding out third was S F Benchmark, nice young setter handled by Larry Smith.

The Amateur Shooting Dog drew twelve dogs and many fine performances were noted by the judges. The stake showed many quality pieces of bird work by each brace of dogs. Taking  top honors was Traveler’s Split Rail handled by Greg Sand. The handsome setter showed several  good pieces of bird work and ran a nice race finishing the hour to the front. Second was Nemaha Cinch for Dr. Pat McInteer. Cinch was credited with a nice bunch of birds with good manners, and finished the hour to the front. S F Saltwater for Larry Smith had several mannerly finds with good manners earning him third.  Other dogs of the stake were credited with finds.

The Open (All-Age) Derby was noted as a very competitive stake as many showed the qualities of extreme range and all-age independence. The judges mentioned several nice performances and enjoyable to judge.  The first and second placed dogs were braced together which made for an exciting  brace. S F Benchmark ran an all-age forward race and had a mannerly piece of bird work. Westfall’s Wheels Up  displayed a nice all-age race and was credited with a find finishing to the front at time. Intensive Chain Breaker placed third showing all-age range and independence.
